White metal ingot. A cast oval fragment of dense bright white metal which has been tightly rolled, hammered to round-ended cylindrical form and subsequently indented. Similar objects have been submitted to the Treasure process in the past as potential silver ingots, though they have frequently been considered of recent date by early medieval period specialists based at the British Museum, either with or without the identification of the material by laboratory investigation. The mass of the object does not coincide closely with that of a series of weights – derived from the Scandi…

White metal ingot. A short cylindrical object with rounded ends and hammered overall. The metal is bright and dense. Similar objects have been submitted to the Treasure process in the past as potential silver ingots, though they have frequently been considered of recent date by early medieval period specialists based at the British Museum, either with or without the identification of the material by laboratory investigation. White metal decanter label. A milled oval plate of lightweight white metal with stamped details as follow: a blank oval panel appears at the centre of a plain cross with florets on it viewed against a finely lined background, and with a cabled ring appearing as an outer order between the beams of the cross. Part of a loop appears at the top [as viewed here]. Lightly crumpled. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1875-1925 Width: 69mm, Height: 49.1mm, Thickness (plate): 0.8mm, Weight: 4.62gms

White metal unidentified object fragments. Fifty-three scraps of a solidified melted alloy rendered amorphous by intense heat, possibly aluminium. Accompanied by hollow struts of similar material. Though the material is similar to that encountered on aircraft crash sites, its restricted distribution might rather suggest machinery involved in a bonfire in this case. The coincidental occurrence of other metalworking debris in the same area is unexplained. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-2000 Weight: c.450gms

Broad period: MODERN
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
White metal unidentified object fragment. A small concavo-convex billet of white metal with a curving surface which appears beaten on its convex surface and appearing gouged or distorted on its concave underside. Though the outer surface appears similar to the end of an early medieval ingot, the underside appears to indicate catastrophic damage arising from mechanical action or failure, and at all events is not what would be expected of the manual subdivision of a small ingot. Nor does the current mass relate to systems of measurement thought to have been observed in early medieval tim…

White metal unidentified object. Solid cast cylindrical rod, apparently crimped at one end, broken at the other and pitted overall; burning may have resulted in this oddly turd-like appearance. Possibly from an airframe – though aircraft crash sites will usually produce unmistakeable quantities of debris – or from other machinery. White metal unidentified object. A broken and abraded spherical object, with no trace of the mould line to be expected of a lead shot, and probably of a harder metal. Broken raggedly with loss of perhaps one third of its fabric. This object was tested with a magnet and this did not indicate a ferrous metal. In appearance this resembles an extremely distressed ball bearing, and the surface damage and breakage may both arise from its involvement in catastrophic mechanical failure. White metal unidentified object. A neatly cast rectangular billet of hard dense metal with crisp arises between its flat faces and retaining a grey tint overall. Objects resembling this often appear along modern roadsides where they have presumably dropped off motor vehicles, though this reporter is entirely unclear as to their automotive use, and would welcome elucidation by a garage mechanic or motor enthusiast. The finder reports that recent scratches revealing a bright silvery surface were inflicted during her preliminary investigation of the object. Suggested date: Modern, 1980-20…

White metal unidentified object fragment. A cast fragment torn from a probably curved or cylindrical component with rounded edges and a sunken mid-part, with two small solid cylindrical projections [of diameter 6.8mm] flanking a larger hollow cylinder [diameter 13mm] and joined to it by integrally cast flanges projecting at an acute angle from its hollowed back. The mid-part of the component has a finished edge at one end of its surviving extent, while the rounded edges to either side formerly continued and are now raggedly torn. White metal medallion. A shield-shaped medallion with a suspension loop at the top. One side bears the image of a motor car and the legend: PRESENTED WITH/THE WIZARD/ 15.9 BENTLEY. The other side shows an elephant, with the caption: MYSTIC SIGNS / No. 1. This was a free gift with the Wizard comic published by D C Thompson 1922-1963, and relaunched 1970-1978. Broad period: MODERN

White metal toy. Discoid round shield detached from a toy soldier modelled at a scale of 20mm or 1:72. The shield has been carefully painted by the owner with enamel paints, with a yellow field, two red chevrons and two groups of four pellets, with red areas highlighted in black ink, and with a central glossy orange boss. The back of the shield is tan, and has a central pit for attachment to the soldier. A shield of later Roman or early medieval date is probably intended, with a motif perhaps vaguely inspired by those of the Notitia Dignitatum. The scale and subject suggest this to ha…
