Copper alloy possible toy fragment. Cast solid disc or wheel with a thin outer rim with faint fine radial lines and with a small central pit, possibly from a toy motor car with a tyred wheel or spare wheel represented. Patinated. The character Noddy, a creation of 1950s children’s author Enid Blyton, drove a yellow car which would be equipped with wheels like this. Lead alloy toy fragment. Hollow-cast head and neck of a bridled horse modelled at a scale somewhat larger than 54mm/1:32, with a distinctively broad brow and protruding eyes and with a mane falling to one side. The metal retains a greyish tint. The scale and somewhat coarse modelling point to a product of one of the early 20th-century competitors of toymaker William Britains - Johillco made slightly larger figures - probably representing a mounted soldier or cowboy. Abraded. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1939 Height: 29.7mm, Width: 35.4mm, Thickness (wall of casting): 1.2mm, Weigh…

Lead alloy ring. A cast ring of trapezoid section with an inward bevel on its inner and outer edges, with four spurs which may suggest points of attachment of thin internal struts which have been lost. Possibly from a toy or other ephemeral mechanism. The grey tint of the metal and the sharp arises points to a recent date, shared by several objects reported along with it. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Diameter: 27mm, Band Width: 3.7mm, Band Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 7.02gms

County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy possible spoon. A small lead alloy spoon with concavo-convex leaf-shaped bowl and a possibly rolled sheet metal stem, partly melted. Probably from a table cruet; the metal retains a grey tint pointing to its recent date. Though initially appearing like a dribble of solidified lead melt, the form of bowl and stem are retained where the fabric is un-melted and is harder than unalloyed lead. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Length: 40.2mm, Width: 7.5mm, Thickness: 5.7mm, Weight: 2.78gms

Lead alloy toy fragment. Cast or hollow cast naturalistically rendered model of a bridled horse at a scale of c.1:40, the head and neck remain with indications of head harness and possibly a covered military saddle; the rest of the model is melted and/or lost. Patinated. Possibly a semi-flat rendition, which might point to Continental, and if so probably German, manufacture of a mounted tin soldier. Lead alloy toy fragment. Hollow-cast and naturalistically rendered model of a milkmaid at her pail at a scale of 54mm or 1:32. The figure crouches before the bucket with both hands above its surface, she was presumably to be juxtaposed with a model of a cow; her head and the back of the lower body are lost together with the long garment she wears. The Farm Set introduced by Britains in 1922 may have included this piece or may have spurred its manufacture by a competitor; the arms are not moveable on this model, which was a usual feature of Britains’ figures. Lead alloy toy farm animal. Hollow cast naturalistically rendered sheep, standing, modelled at a scale of 1:32 or 54mm. The beast is hornless with a docked tail and a straight broad back, all characteristics of a modern or improved breed. Probably from a farm animal set; the first was produced by William Britains in 1922 as a post--Great-War change from their extensive range of tin soldiers, though other makers soon followed their lead. This model lacks any indication of the manufacturer, so may not be made by Britains. Either patinated or retaining extensive traces of white paint. Sug…

Lead alloy coin. A probably modern forgery of a late Iron Age coin whose details would appear to be drawn from the uninscribed gold coinages of the Corieltauvi. It does not resemble the silver units of that tribe. Some examples have been found with a coating of gold paint, perhaps here lost to erosion in a coastal find-spot. The distribution of these objects appears to be skewed towards sites frequented by metal detectorists, and these may represent the ‘salting’ of sites by rival collectors, whether in jest or malice. A ‘mint’ in the Grimsby area is suspected. …

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy unidentified object. A thick cast rectangular plate; its rigidity suggests an alloy while its mass suggests at least the substantial presence of lead. A hole of diameter 6.3mm passes though the object towards one end, and on one side is surrounded by a mark of 15.5mm diameter showing where a headed bolt has passed through. One sees objects like this along the verges of busy modern roads, and always wonders what they are/were, and whether they will be missed. Presumably from machinery. Lead alloy possible coin. An oval ‘flan’ with broken edge all around; possibly a modern forgery intended to represent an Iron Age or Anglo-Saxon coin. If this identification were sustained, this would be a further example of those modern forgeries of ancient coins which have been distributed across land frequented by detectorists, probably by other detectorists. A ‘mint’ in the Grimsby area is suspected. Obverse description: plain. Reverse description: off-centre pellet, spidery Y-shaped lines intersecting to either side. Suggested date: Modern, 1980-2000 …
