A flint core of Mesolthic date. The core is pyramidical in shape. With the upper face being oval in plan with blade removals around much of the outter edge. It is likely that this was formed on a small riberine flint pebble 20mm high, 37mm long, 28mm wide. Weight 16.4g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete snapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or early Neolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool, probably best described as a knife, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular (crested) in cross section. The blade has been snapped un the upper and lower edges. The bulb of percussion and striking / knapping platform are lost on the lower (ventral) face. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridges. Both the long edges have been retouched on the dorsal faces; the retouch is best described as being disorganised short, su…

A Mesolithic microlith / blade / bladelet (7,000 to 4,000 BC), grey in colour. This piece is sub-rectilinear in plan and sub-rectilinear in section, tapering to a point at the distal end. The dorsal face comprises 3 main facets, whilst the ventral face is virtually featureless, save a faint bulb of percussion detectable when felt. One edge displays possible irregular hardhammer retouch, however this could also be due to plough damage. Both the proximal and distal ends show signs of being deliberately snapped This piece weighs 0.25 grams, measuring 12mm in length, 6mm in width and 2…

Flint 'pyramid' / conical core for the production of bladelets / microliths dating from the later Mesolithic period (6500 - 3500 BC). The core is formed from a very small nodule (probably a river pebble) which has been extensively worked in a single direction. There is no cortext present on any surface. The shape of the core is pyramidal with one clearly defined flat striking platform from which small blades / bladelets have been removed. There seems to be little evidence of specific redressing of the striking platform - although the surface suggest that it has been heavily used. Belo…

Small fragment of tertiary debitage - most probably a core-rejuvination flake. The dorsal face has a series of very shallow parallel sided flake removal scars suggesting it has been knapped from the tip of a pyramidical later mesolithic core to rejuinate / refresh the working area and allow for flaking in a different direction. This form of waste is classically dated to the late Mesolithic period (4000-3000 BC). The flake has a mid grey colour. Length 12.3mm, Width 10.7mm, Thickness 3.8mm, Weight 0.3g.

Flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are both present. The external edge on the ventral face has been retouched to form a cutting / scraping tool. The distal end has been deliberately snapped. The blade also shows signs of abrasion in the ploughsoil resulting in direct percussion damage along one edge (which looks similar to retouch albeit very disorganised). The blade is a mid grey colour. It measures: .Length 18.4mm, Width 13.5mm…

Heavily eroded and abraded flint blade of later Mesolithic date (5000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are both lost through deliberate snapping. The original edges are lost andthe dorsal face has a jagged and irregular profile. The blade is a mottled mid-grey colour. It measures: Length 19.9mm, Width 11.3mm, Thickness 4.3mm, Weight 0.9g.

Triangular shaped flake of teriary debitage. The edges of the flake are slightly faceted - possibly suggesting that this is a rejuvination flake from a flint core. The edges though are uneven and therefore are not the classical faceted shape expected for such flakes. The flint is a mid grey brown colour. It measures 16.6mm long, 12.6mm wide, 3.3mm thick and weighs 0.7grams.

Flint notched blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are both present - although trimmed. Both the external long edges have been retouched and an irregular removal / deliberate notch is present on one edge- the area around this is retouched possibly suggesting the removal shape had a specific use. A small area of yellow cream coloured cortext is present near the striking platform on the dorsal face. The blade is a mid grey colour with the …

An irregular core which has been extensively worked in one direction and shows slight evidence of being worked in a secon direction (from the opposite end) to produce small blades or microliths of probable later Mesolithic date (5000-3500 BC). The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and has several areas of irregular surface caused by movement. The fragment is worn and the remains of working / striking platforms is lost. There is no evidence of rejuvenation flakes or multi platform working. The core is a mid- grey colour with a slightly milky white coloured patina. The cor…

Flint blade like flake of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and has a crested (triangular shaped) cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion have been removed by trimming / snapping. There is no evidence of the edges being reworked - and it is this represents a piece of secondary debitage / blade removal during preparation of a new core. The blade is a mid mottled grey colour with a large piece of white cortex along one edge. It measures: 18.2mm in length, 11.1mm width, is 3.7mm thick and weighs 0.6 grams.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A burin of later Mesolithic date formed on a snapped mid grey mottled flint blade. The bulb of percussion and striking platform have been removed by snapping although the ventral face has clear evidence of chonciodal fracturing. The proximal snapped edge has been reworked with steep sided retouch creating a projecting point. This point has been made more angular by a deliberate vertical removal that has removed a small rectangular flake giving the point a specific identifiable profile. The rectangular notch at the mid point of the blade is a modern removal from movement in the soil. T…

Base of a later Mesolithic bladelet. The bladelet is formed on a mottled grey coloured flint with a small area of cortext on the dorsal face. the striking platform and bulb of percusion is present on the reverse face. The dorsal face has small areas of abrupt retouch on one edge. The deliberate break is old and patinated. The left hand corner of the break seems to have been knapped to form a burin / micro burin - with a distinct vertical removal and retouch on the opposite edge creating a projecting point. Tertiary flake of debitage of Mesolithic date. The flint is a mottled grey colour and the bulb of percussion is present on the ventral face. The blade has been deliberately snapped and an irregular hinge fragment is present at one end - the mesal edges are not reworked suggesting this is a waste product / discarded flint from the third phase of knapping. The flint measures 14.7mm length, 14.6mm width and is 3.3mm thick; it weighs 0.9 grams
