A Mesolithic flint tranchet axe/adze or 'Thames pick' dating c. 9000-4000 BC.
The pick is an irregular, elongated pointed oval shape in plan with a broadly lozengiform in cross section, and flake removals with minimal rippling present on all sides. One face has a deep elongated triangular removal with a V shaped cross-section. The distal end is wedge-shaped in profile with broadly convex cutting edge . The butt end is narrow and rounded with the cortex remaining on 75% of the butt which extends down one side of the tool. Other patches of…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A large and complete Mesolithic flint tranchet adze dating to circa 10000-4000 BC, 176mm in length and struck from a grey-brown flint. The tool is extensively worked on all sides with soft-hammered removals and has a lenticular cross section and a distinctively curved side profile, suggesting use as an adze. The cutting edge is rounded and symmetrical, with a wedge-shaped side profile and evidence for a tranchet removal on the dorsal face. Small patches of buff coloured cortex remain on the butt end and ventral surface.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A stone perforated artefact of probable Mesolithic or Neolithic date, c. 10000-2351 BC.
The artefact is a rounded sub-circular sandstone with two central shallow convex dimples on each face, and a lenticular cross-section. Each dimple shows evidence of 'pecking', which may have been used together with griding to create the dimples. Scratches and nicks across both faces may be a mixture of contemporary adaptation, post-depositional damage and geological flaws. Dark brown/reddish staining around the perimeter of the dimples might be evidence of heat damage, …

A flint tranchet axe dating to the Mesolithic period (c.9000-4000 BC).
Description: The axe is irregular rectangular in shape and sub-lozenge in cross-section. The flatter ventral face has had much of the cortext removed and large flakes have been removed across the surface and around the edges, including the blade, which has been formed by one strike. Finer working of smaller flaking is evident around the edges of the sides. The butt is wider than the body and is again formed of large flaking. The dorsal face is bowed with widespread shal…

A complete knapped lithic implement of possible Mesolithic to early Neolithic date, c. 7000 - 3500 BC. The object is a serrated blade or saw which is broadly oval in plan and D-shaped in section. The ventral surface is smooth with visible ripples of percussion. Both edges of the dorsal surface feature short, stepped, low-angle retouch which create saw tooth serrated edges along the entire length.
The flint is an orange-brown colour with occasional lighter and darker inclusions. The lack of pebble cortex suggests that this object was formed from …

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Mesolithic retouched flint blade dating from 10,000 - 4000 BC. It is a tertiary blade struck on semi-translucent dark brown flint. It is rectangular with a double dorsal ridge. The distal end has some scaled, abrupt, short retouch, perhaps to form a scraping edge, and there is some sporadic retouch or edge damage on the long edges, with more careful working at the proximal ends of the sides. This is also abrupt, scaled and short. There is also a small removal right across the ventral face at the proximal end. The blade is 38.1mm long, 13.9mm wide, 4.3mm thick and weighs 2.64g.
