Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Late Mesolithic flint microlith made from a tertiary flake of pale grey near transparent flint. It is rectangular in plan. Both the proximal and distal end terminate where they have been snapped, leaving hinge fractures. Dorsal ridge runs parallel approximately 1mm from the edge, for the entire length of the microlith. The other mesal edge, 2mm from the ridge, has extremely fine short, parallel, abrupt retouch. Dating from c7000 to c4000 BC.
The length is 5mm, width 3mm, thickness 0.5mm, and the weight is less than 0.1g.

A dark brown flint scraper dating to the late Mesolithic to early Neolithic 6500 - 2100BC. The dorsal side is mainly cortical and has lots of conchoidal curves suggesting a lot of retouching. The ventrical side has a large, prominent bulb of percussion closer to one side of proximal end. The proximal end is rounded on the side closer to the bulb of percussion and slightly jagged on the side further from the bulb of percussion (not the distal though). The butt is flat and clean. The distal end seems to have snapped off as the end is clean and flat. This suggests that it was once part o…
