Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Bournemouth
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic tranchet axe or adze, rectangular in plan, lozenge-shaped in profile, triangular in section at the butt end and lenticular at the slightly wider blade end. Made on an elongated flint nodule which has been flaked from both faces to remove most of the cortex, except for a small patch at the butt end, to produce the outline shape of the axe. Large flakes have been removed from one edge of both faces, mid-way along the axe, resulting in a thinning of the axe at this point, apparently for hafting the axe. At the blade end, the axe has been thinned on both faces by the removal …

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint hollow or concave scraper, sub-rectangular in plan, rectangular in profile and triangular in section. Made on a short, thick secondary flake with a patch of cortex remaining at the proximal end and extending along one lateral surface. A small bulb of percussion remains at the proximal end of the ventral face and a small negative bulb on the opposite dorsal face. The distal end of the flake is broken, resulting in a right angle between the broken edge and both the ventral and dorsal faces. The right margin of the ventral face has been abruptly retouched by the removal of about …

One flint microlithic backed oblique point, 39 mm in length, 9 mm wide and 2 mm thick, weighing 1.2 g. It has a smooth ventral face, roughly elliptical in plan with a snapped proximal end and a pointed distal end, sub-rectangular in profile and triangular in section. The left margin of the dorsal face has been vertically retouched along two-thirds of its length, to the point. There is no evidence of cortex which suggests that it was formed on a tertiary flake. The surface of the flint is pale grey mottled with darker grey and is likely to be derived from a beach pebble. Bond (2004)…

One snapped Greensand chert microlithic oblique point, 21 mm long, 9 mm wide and 3 mm thick, weighing 0.8 g. It has a smooth ventral face, is roughly triangular in plan although it may originally have been elliptical before the loss of the proximal end. It is triangular in both profile and section. One edge on the dorsal face had been steeply retouched. The colour of the chert is light brown and it is coarser than local flint and is likely derived from Greensand chert in Devon. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar obliquely blunted point from an Early Mesolithic site Thatcham Berkshir…

A flint obliquely blunted microlith, trapezoidal in plan, lenticular in profile and in section. A section of a narrow flint bladelet which has been snapped at right angles at its proximal end, close to the striking platform; traces of the bulb of percussion are visible on the ventral face at this end. The right margin of the dorsal face of the bladelet has been snapped obliquely at the distal end and the oblique margin has then been blunted by retouch to produce the finished microlith. The flint is a fine, translucent pale grey-brown colour. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar obliqu…

A microdenticulate, sub-rectangular in plan, an elongated rectangle in profile and plano-convex in section. The central portion of a flint bladelet, modified by the removal of a spall from the right margin to form a point at the right edge of the distal end. Both side margins of the dorsal face have been retouched to produce a denticulated edge. The distal end has also been retouched, resulting in an edge which would be suitable for scraping. The completed tool is a combined burin (or graver) and end scraper. The flint is grey-brown in colour and likely derives from a local beach pebb…

A flint microdenticulate from the Mesolithic period, plano-convex in plan and profile and trapezoidal in section. Made on a secondary flake with a very small area of cortex remaining at the distal end. A very small remnant of the striking platform is visible at the proximal end. The bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples can be seen on the surface of the ventral face. The dorsal surface bears the scars of the removal of several previous longitudinal flakes or blades. The proximal end of the dorsal surface has been retouched by the removal of around eight or nine very small pressure…

Flint transverse arrowhead, 'petit tranchet' type, triangular in plan, lozenge-shape in profile, and flat in section. All margins have been unifacially retouched on the dorsal face and there is a bevelled 'tranchet' edge on the right margin of the dorsal face, running from the snapped proximal end above the bulb of percussion, to the apex of the triangle at the distal end. The flint is a mottled light to dark grey colour and has the remains of fragments of cortex at the proximal end adn at the third apex of the arrowhead, at its base, where it would have been hafted onto an arrow sh…

Flint flake scraper or bladelet, sub-oval in plan, and trapezoidal in profile and in section. Long flakes have been taken off the dorsal face, vertically, from the proximal to the distal end, and laterally from the edge of the cortex to the unimarginally reworked left edge of the dorsal face. The dorsal margin of the proximal end has also been worked and the distal end has been snapped off. The flint is a mottled light grey colour with cortex surviving along the right edge of the dorsal face and the length to breadth ratio is exactly 2:1. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar blade…

The scraper is ovate in plan, triangular in section and lozenge-shaped in profile. The chert is a light orange colour, which suggests it is probably greensand chert from the south coast of Devon. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:2. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 109, Fig.5.93, No.172, which is dated to the earlier Mesolithic and another on page 132, Fig…

Flint microlithic blade or saw, rectangular in plan, lozenge-shaped in profile and triangular in section. The distal end and right margin have been unifacially worked on the dorsal face. The ventral face retains part of the bulb of percussion at the proximal end. There is no cortex remaining on the surface of the flint which suggests that this is a tertiary flake. The flint is a mottled dark to light grey colour and the ratio of length to breadth is 3:1. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 95, Fig.5.81, No.6, which is identified as a microlithic saw (after Wymer 1977).

The ventral faces retain part of the bulb of percussion at the proximal end. There is cortex remaining on the surface of two of the bladelets which suggests that these are secondary flakes. Flint microlithic backed bladelet with retouch on the right margin of the dorsal face. The proximal end has been snapped off above the bulb of percussion, so that the bladelet has been truncated. The flint is dark brown and translucent and likely to have come from Beer Head in Devon. There is no evidence of any cortex, suggesting that this is a tertiary flake. The length to breadth ratio is about 2:1. Bond (2004) ilustrates similar examples on page 113, Fig.5.97, No.L30, and on page 119, Fig.5.103, No.38, which are dated to the Late Mesolithic period.

Flint single-platform micro-blade core, oval in plan, sub-rectangular in section and semi-circular in profile, with a deep hinge fracture at the base. All faces around the circumference of the core show the scars from the flake removal for producing microliths, from the layer of cortex at the distal end to the ridged and stepped proximal end. The flint is a mottled grey to brown colour with white speckles and its colour and curvature suggest that has probably come from a local beach pebble. All faces around the circumference of the cores show the scars from the flake removal for producing microliths, from the edges of the layers of cortex remaining on each core. Flint single-platform blade core, ovate in plan, triangular in profile and trapezoidal in section. Flakes have been removed all of the way around the circumference of the core, from the platform edge, and only a very thin layer of cortex remains on a small part (about 15 mm) of the edge. The flint is a mottled light grey colour and may have been derived from a local beach pebble which has since been exposed to heat and cold so that the colour of the flint has become lighter. The core has also been in contact with iron which has left staining on most of the edges. The length to bread…
