Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A perforated stone implement of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is sub-ovoid in shape with one rounded end and one narrower, angular end. There is a cylindrical perforation situated behind the narrower end, c.31mm in diameter. There are linear marks on both faces and around the wider end indicative of impact during use. It is made from a fine grained, light yellow, sedimentary stone. The precise function of these objects is debated, although they are frequently described as 'mace heads'. Dating is also uncertain. Although traditionally thought to …

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint bifacially worked implement of probable Neolithic date. It is an elongated sub-oval shape and symmetrical pointed oval in cross-section. There is covering, scaled retouch on both faces with some finer retouch along the sides and ends. Patchy brown patination covers a small area of flaking in the centre of one face, while there is limited patination elsewhere (perhaps suggesting that an earlier object may have been reworked?). There is very little signs of wear and a little rolling in places on the edges. The general consensus seems to be that this is an implement…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete retouched flint blade of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A elongated tertiary blade with rounded ends. A light coloured, translucent flint with medium patination on both faces. There are patches of crude, short, abrupt potential retouch along both edges, which has removed this patination, suggesting later re-working of an older re-discovered blade (although the crude nature of this retouch suggests it may be partially or completely due to natural damage). Length: 54.6mm, width: 19.1mm, thickness: 5.8mm, weight: 6.8g

A perforated stone implement of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is roughly oval in shape with one rounded end and one straight end and is pointed oval in cross-section. There is a small circular hour-glass-shaped perforation through the centre. There is a small amount of damage to both faces and around the edges. The stone appears to be igneous of uncertain origin. The precise function of these objects is debated, although they are frequently described as 'mace heads'. Dating is also uncertain. A large flint cylindrical core of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is an a large, elongated shape, sub-triangular in cross-section. There are long, narrow blade scars on one face and smaller flake scars on the others running in a different direction. Working is limited and undiagnostic so a broad date range is suggested here. A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is sub-trapezoidal in shape; long and narrow, but becoming slightly wider blade end. It is roughly lozenge-shaped in cross-section with a raised central ridge running longitundinally across both faces. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch with small patches of cortex remaining in places. There appear to be attempts at transverse 'tranchet' flake removal on both faces of the cutting edge. The surface is covered with thick orange stained cortex. The darker flint beneath is partially visible on one face. Length: 15…

A complete retouched flint blade (possible awl/borer) of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A tertiary blade, struck using a hard hammer. It has an elongated sharp point to the right side of the distal end, which has been enhanced using a small amount of retouch. There is additional short, sub-parallel, abrupt retouch along both edges of the dorsal face and a small amount of invasive retouch in the centre of this face, running from one side of the central ridge. Two incomplete flint Mesolithic blades. 1. A tertiary blade with an abrupt break across both ends and some rolling along both edges. There are no other signs of retouch. This is an exceptionally shiny dark grey flint with lighter grey diagonal striations faintly visible. Lawrence Billington (pers. com.) suggests this is not a local flint and was probably glacially introduced, plus has been in contact with intense heat at some stage. An incomplete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe or Neolithic flaked adze. It is trapezoidal in shape, expanding slightly towards the damaged end and roughly triangular in cross-section with a raised ridge running longitudinally down the centre of one face. There is a rough break across one end where a section is missing. There is invasive, scaled retouch on both faces, but this is less extensive on the flatter face. The flint is dark brown in colour with some orange staining and very little patination. A very small amount of cortex survives on both faces. Because of damage it cannot be…

A fragment of Mesolithic to early Neolithic flintworking debitage, or possibly a late Mesolithic microlith. It is roughly triangular in shape. There are ripple lines of the ventral face suggesting that it has been struck, but there is an abrupt break across the proximal end and a spall has been removed from the left side. There appears to be a small amount of fine, short, abrupt retouch along the right edge and distal end, suggesting that this may be a microlith of later Mesolithic date or probably a snapped blade. A Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead. There is scaled, invasive flaking scars on both faces. The flint is light brown in colour with extensive opaque patches in places. There is heavy patination on all surfaces, but there is a less patinated section to one side of the blade end. There is orange staining on the ridges. There is no clear tranchet flake at the blade end. A large flake has been removed from one face at this end, but there is additional flaking around this area. The form and type of flaking suggest a Mesolithic date, however, and so the object is unlikely to be a Neolithic …
