Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is ovoid in shape; long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. It is roughly triangular in cross-section with a raised central ridge running longitundinally across one face. The other face is much flatter. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch producing large scars. A large triangular transverse 'tranchet' flake has been removed from one side of the cutting end. The flint is mottled grey with much milky patination and some orange staining from the soil. A patch of chalky cortex remains on the dorsal face. Leng…

A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is elongated ovoid in shape; long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. Both faces are convex and it is roughly lozenge-shaped in cross-section with an off-centre ridge running down the centre of each one. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch producing large scars. A large triangular transverse 'tranchet' flake has been removed from one side of the cutting end. The flint is dark grey in colour with lighter mottled patination covering much of both faces and some orange staining. Length: 112.10mm, width: 34.73…

A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is elongated ovoid in shape; long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. Both faces are convex and it is roughly triangular in cross-section with an off-centre ridge running down the centre one face only, while the other face is more flattened. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch producing large scars largely running inwards towards the centre. There is a small amount of cortex covering one scar on one face. A Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead. There is scaled, invasive flaking scars on both faces. The flint is light brown in colour with extensive opaque patches in places. There is heavy patination on all surfaces, but there is a less patinated section to one side of the blade end. There is orange staining on the ridges. There is no clear tranchet flake at the blade end. A large flake has been removed from one face at this end, but there is additional flaking around this area. The form and type of flaking suggest a Mesolithic date, however, and so the object is unlikely to be a Neolithic …

Object type: SIDE SCRAPER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint side scraper, notched flake and possible burin. Probably of Mesolithic to Neolithic date. To the left side of the dorsal face is a notch that is possibly the result of microlith production. Along the left side of the ventral face fine, short, low angle, parallel retouch can be seen, with two, small, apparently deliberate notches in the centre. The butt is wide and the bulb virtually non-existant. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour, with lighter milky patches in places. Length: 40.47mm, Width: 25.11mm, Thickness: 5.19mm, Weight: 6.7g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint side and end scraper of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The scraper is formed on a tertiary flake of dark brown-grey flint, flecked with white in places. The flake is sub-retangular in form, but rounded at the distal end and is slightly curved in profile (when looking at it from the side). The ventral face is unworked, with a large butt and prominent ripple lines suggesting that a large, hard hammer was used. A small portion of the proximal end may have broken away following deposition, however, as the break there is fresh and sharp still. The dorsal face has a larg…

A scraper or knife of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The implement is sub-rectangular in form. The ventral face is smooth and unworked, apart from a few removals at the proximal end. The dorsal face has a long ridge running longitudinally, slightly to the right of the centre. On the right side of this a small amount of cortex remains, whilst to the left of this a large flake has been removed creating a sharp edge. Semi-abrupt, long, subparallel retouch can be seen on the edge of the proximal end and along the right edge of the dorsal face. The flint is mid grey-brown in co…

A serrated flint blade of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The blade is long and thin in shape and uses a tertiary flake. Both edges have irregular and very fine retouch, producing a slightly serrated cutting edge. The bulb is fairly prominent and the butt quite small. The tip of the distal end is missing, but the break is fairly sharp, suggesting that this damage occured post-deposition. The flint is grey-brown in colour, with a milky, speckled patina. A small flint end scraper or denticulate, formed on a crested blade. It is fairly thick and sub-triangular in cross-section with a central ridge running the length of the dorsal face. This has been slightly retouched along its length. The sides of the scraper curve inwards. There is a small amount of low-angle, short, scaled retouch along the left edge of the ventral face, creating a slightly serrated edge. Both ends of the dorsal face are rounded and have abrupt, long, sub-parallel retouch. The ventral face has no visible bulb and diffuse ripples. The butt is fairly small, but has be…

A crude flint scraper of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The scraper appears to have been created on an older flake, which has been reused at a later date. The flake is long, thin and curved in shape. It is a secondary flake with chalky (possibly nodular) cortex remaining along one side. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour, but with an extensive lighter, milky patina. Semi-abrupt, inavasive, scaled retouch along the left edge of the dorsal face has clearly removed this patina, suggesting that the flake must have been created, deposited and later reused. The flake was created usi…

A flint side and end scraper, probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, created on an earlier core rejuvenation flake of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A sub-rectangular secondary flake with pebble cortex remaining along one edge. There are three long, thin flaking scars on the dorsal face, suggesting that the flake was removed from a small Mesolithic to early Neolithic core in order to provide a fresh surface for working. This earlier flake has been deposited and formed an extensive milky patina on both faces. However, it then appears to have been discovered and r…

To the right side of the dorsal face is a single long flaking scar. There is semi-abrupt, short, sub-parallel retouch along the length of right edge of the dorsal face. The flake has been removed using a soft hammer. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour with a slightly speckled milky patina. Flint scraper, probably of upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic date. The object is long and thin in shape. The ventral face has a fairly pronounced bulb and is slightly concave, meaning that both ends of the object curve downwards slightly when viewed from the side. The butt is fairly wide. The dorsal face is sub triangular in section at the distal end, becoming flatter towards the proximal end. It is covered with several long, thin flaking scars. The butt is fairly narrow. The ventral face has a prominent bulb with clear ripple lines, suggesting that a hard hammer was used. A small amount of very crude, uneven low angle to semi-abrupt, short retouch can be seen, alternating between both faces along each side.
