Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crude flint scraper, which could beĀ of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date, produced from a secondary flake. The dorsal face has three primary long, thin, vertical flaking scars. The butt is fairly narrow. The ventral face has a prominent bulb with clear ripple lines, suggesting that a hard hammer was used. A small amount of very crude, uneven low angle to semi-abrupt, short retouch can be seen, alternating between both faces along each side. There may also be a very small amount of retouch along the edge of the distal end. At the distal end a small amount of chalky, orange cortex …

Five flint microliths, all found close together. All are probably of Mesolithic date. 1. Length: 29.69mm, Width: 14.27mm, Thickness: 4.41mm, Weight: 2.10g Teritary flake. When viewed from the dorsal face the microlith curves slightly to the left. It is sub-triangular in cross-section, with a central ridge running along the dorsal face. Very fine retouch can be seen along both edges, alternating between faces. There are several small notches along both edges, creating an almost serrated edge. A slight notch to either side of the proximal end creates a slight narrowing of this section…

A complete small flint core. The core is uniface, with a series of long, thin and slightly broader scars on each face. One face has a series of smaller flaking scars around its outside edges. The flint is buff-brown coloured with a matt patina at one end and darker grey-brown with a shiny patina at the other end. As the object is fairly undiagnotic it could easily be of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. However, as it was found in the same field as five microliths, it is perhaps more likely to belong to earlier in this period. Length: 28.21mm, Width: 28.01mm, Thickness: 23.02, W…

Flint microlith. The object curves slightly to the left when viewed from the dorsal face. Fairly irregular semi-abrupt, short, scaled retouch can be seen along most of the left and right edges of the dosal face. The upper part of a small notch can be seen on the left side of the dosral face at the proximal end, probably created to allow the object to be snapped from a microburin. The flint is grey-brown in colour, with lighter patches and a shiny patina. Length: 27.32mm, Width: 14.24mm, Thickness: 6.72mm, Weight: 2.8g

Flint blade on a secondary flake of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The object is long, thin and trapezoidal in cross-section. There are two long, central removals on the dorsal face, flanked on each side by a further long one. The removal to the left remains covered with cortex. Patches of very fine, irregular retouch can be seen along both edges, creating a serrated effect. Further abrupt, short, scaled retouch can be seen at the distal end, creating a slight point. The object is light grey-brown colour with a shiny patina that is milky in places. Length: 35.31mm, Wid…

Flint blade on a tertiary flake probably of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The object is long, thin and sub-triangular in cross-section. There is possibly a small amount of crude, irregular retouch along both edges, creating a serrated edge that remains quite sharp. However, some of this is also due to post-depositional damage. The flint is mid-grey in colour with some lighter patches and speckles, and orange staining in places from the soil. Length: 21.60mm, Width: 12.15mm, Thickness: 4.26mm, Weight: 1.2g

Flint implement on a secondary flake, which appears to have had several uses, possibly at different periods. To the right side of the ventral face is a notch, where a portion has been snapped away, possibly during microlith production. Above this, at the distal end, a small amount of retouch has created a slight spur, which may have been used as a borer. A small amount of further short, low-angle retouch can be seen in various places along the right edge of the dorsal face, creating a slightly uneven, serrated edge, perhaps indicating use as a knife or scraper. In the centre of this i…

A flint side scraper, notched flake and possible burin. Probably of Mesolithic to Neolithic date. To the left side of the dorsal face is a notch that is possibly the result of microlith production. Along the left side of the ventral face fine, short, low angle, parallel retouch can be seen, with two, small, apparently deliberate notches in the centre. The butt is wide and the bulb virtually non-existant. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour, with lighter milky patches in places. Length: 40.47mm, Width: 25.11mm, Thickness: 5.19mm, Weight: 6.7g

A crude tool, which may possibly have had several functions. Both edges have sporadic short, fine, sub-parallel retouch in only a few places, creating an almost serrated edge. The proximal end has also been shaped into a slight point. The object could therefore be described as a saw, scraper, or piercer/borer. All surfaces and edge are quite uneven. The flint is grey in colour with many lighter speckles and a milky patina. The lack of diagnostic features means the object could be of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. 25 worked flint cores (some probably chert, or a chert-like flint). All from the same site, which has yielded a wide range of flint tools and flint working debris of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. The cores are fairly uniform in size, though there are a few larger ones. Most are single platform, albeit largely quite irregular in shape. The degree of working varies, but is generally fairly limited. The flaking scars are long and thin or very small on all of the cores, so this is not mentioned in the individual descriptions below. The flint varies in quality, but is largely poor qu…

Flint microlith. The dorsal face has a central lozenge shaped flaking scar, with a thinner one on each side. Both right and left edges have a slight inwards curve as they extend upwards from the proximal end. The right edge then curves outwards slightly - this section has been finely worked along its extent, creating a slightly rough, and still sharp, edge. The left edge curves inwards slightly and is smooth and sharp. Both edges come together at the distal end to form a sharp point. The flint is mid grey in colour, with a milky patina in places. Probably of Mesolithic to early Neolith…

Flint implement, or perhaps a by-product of implement production. The object is long and thin and has been created on a secondary flake; smooth light orange-brown cortex remains on the left side of the dorsal face. There appears to be deliberately worked serrations to the upper right edge of the dorsal face, suggesting that the object may have been used as a knife or saw. However, halfway down this edge is a notch, rather like those created during microlith production. This is unlikely to have been the cause, however, as the object is covered with a milky patina that is missing on the…
