Mid grey-brown flint. 2. Length: 29.46mm, Width: 17.76mm, Thickness: 3.46mm, Weight: 1.82g Uncertain cortex. Soft hammer. Light grey flint with a thick creamy patina. This is missing where damage has occured following deposition. 3. Length: 18.54mm, Width: 13.76mm, Thickness: 4.37mm, Weight: 0.91g Pebble cortex. Uncertain hammer type. 7 pieces of flintworking debitage of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. 1. Length: 16.71mm, Width: 15.91mm, Thickness: 3.61mm, Width: 0.81g Mid brown flint with an opaque patch. Soft hammer struck. Maybe a very small amount of abrupt retouch to both sides, but this is very limited if there is any. More likely just to be debitage with rolling to the edges. 2. Length: 25.58mm, Width: 19.40mm, Thickness: 12.94mm, Weight: 4.53g Mid opaque grey flint with lighter patches. A very smalled amount of speckled patination. Hammer type unclear. 3. Length: 18.5…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A multi-platform flint core of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. Much of the core is still covered with chalky pebble cortex and the working is very limited. It may possibly show signs of two different phases of working; several probable flaking scars are covered with a thick, milky patina. These appear to be the result of knapping rather than natural processes, but it is difficult to be definate about this as the patination obscures the typical signs. A few, presumably later, scars reveal the mid-grey flint below this patination and are more clearly the result of working. All of t…

Object type: MICROBURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint microburin of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A long, fairly thin tertiary flake, removed using a hard hammer. To the left side (when viewed from the dorsal face), at the distal end, there is a small notch. This may be the result of accidental or post-depositional damage, but is a typical feature of microburins, where a notch is deliberately created to allow the microlith to be snapped away. The flint is light buff-grey in colour. Length: 16.17mm, Width: 10.94mm, Thickness: 3.28mm, Weight: 0.53g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint awl of Meolithic to early Bronze Age date. A long, thin, tertiary flake. There are two long flaking scars to the right of the dorsal face and some very crude low angle, invasive retouch to the right. The awl has been created at the proximal end of the dorsal face via the removal of a few rough flakes to either side. This has also removed the bulb on the ventral face and the butt. The very tip of the point is now missing. There is a sharp break at the distal end. It is unclear whether this is original or later damage. The flint is light grey in colour with a thick, mil…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint microdenticulate of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A sub-triangular tertiary flake. There are several small denticulations running from the proximal end of the dorsal face along the lower half of the right side. Along the left side a long, inwards curving spall has been removed. Together with two uneven, parallel flakes removed from the upper edge of the right side, this creates a point at the distal end. There are a few wide, parallel flaking scars on the dorsal face, creating a smooth surface. The flint is grey in colour with a slight milky patina. The bulb and butt are…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crude side scraper of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. Secondary crested blade, with pebble cortex remaining to the left side of the dorsal face. To the right side of the dorsal face is a single long flaking scar. There is semi-abrupt, short, sub-parallel retouch along the length of right edge of the dorsal face. The flake has been removed using a soft hammer. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour with a slightly speckled milky patina. Given the form, style and size of the scraper, and taking into consideration the date range of the rest of the assemblage with which it was found…

2 notched flakes of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. 1. Length: 35.69mm, Width: 22.70mm, Thickness: 8.65mm, Weight: 6.08g Secondary flake - some pebble cortex remains on the dorsal face. There are several large flaking scars on the dorsal face. To the left of the distal end is a small notch formed from a small amount of crude semi-abrupt, short, scaled retouch which continues around the distal end. Cracking and damage can be seen within the notch more than anywhere else on the object and this damage also seems to be patinated, suggesting that it may be the result of us…

Flint notched flake of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. Secondary flake - a small amount of cortex remains at the distal end. To the left of the dorsal face are three long, thin flaking scars, with a broader scar to the right. On the right edge (when viewed from the dorsal face) a small notch appears to have been deliberately manufactured. Produced using a fairly hard hammer. Flint implement (possibly a borer) of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date with signs of reuse. A secondary flake, with cortex along one edge. The flake itself appears to be earlier in date - the flint is translucent brown in colour with a patchy milky patina. However, at some point it appears to have been subject to high temperatures as there are signs of crazing on both faces and heat cracking along patches of one edge. This cracking appears to have removed the patination where it has occured. The right edge of the dorsal face then appears to have been reworked in places. Small smoun…

A flint side and end scraper, probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, created on an earlier core rejuvenation flake of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A sub-rectangular secondary flake with pebble cortex remaining along one edge. There are three long, thin flaking scars on the dorsal face, suggesting that the flake was removed from a small Mesolithic to early Neolithic core in order to provide a fresh surface for working. This earlier flake has been deposited and formed an extensive milky patina on both faces. However, it then appears to have been discovered and r…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crude flint scraper of Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The scraper appears to have been created on an older flake, which has been reused at a later date. The flake is long, thin and curved in shape. It is a secondary flake with chalky (possibly nodular) cortex remaining along one side. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour, but with an extensive lighter, milky patina. Semi-abrupt, inavasive, scaled retouch along the left edge of the dorsal face has clearly removed this patina, suggesting that the flake must have been created, deposited and later reused. The flake was created usi…

8 flint implements of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. All have only small amounts of retouch and have therefore been grouped together as either very crude scrapers or general multi-purpose non-formal tools. As such it is difficult to date them more closely than this. However, most seem to have been produced on large, unpatinated, crudely produced flakes, which based on the judgments made about the assemblage made below would suggest that most probably date from the later end of this period. 1. Length: 24.31mm, Width: 15.69mm, Thickness: 5.80mm, Weight: 1.88g Secondary…

Five flint flakes. These are probably waste flakes, but have been seperated from the debitage in the assemblage as they may possibly be fragments of worked flakes or non-formal tools. All could be of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. 1. Length: 19.22mm, Width: 15.26mm, Thickness: 2.46mm, Weight: 0.93g Secondary flake - a tiny amount of cortex remains on the dorsal face. Trapezoidal in shape. A few small amount of invasive, scaled retouch at the right side of the distal end on the dorsal face has created a slight point, which appears to be deliberate.
