Flint core. Highly worked, probably due to lack of naturally occurring flint in the area. Mostly long, linear, narrow flaking scars, with some slightly wider ones. The flint is dark grey in colour, with small creamy yellow-grey patches. Probably Mesolithic to early Neolithic in date.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Tertiary greensand chert flake, of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The flake is long and thick, with a sub-rectangular cross section at the proximal end and a sub-triangular section at the distal end. The ventral face is very slightly concave, whilst the dorsal face is notably convex. The flake has a narrow butt and a diffuse bulb on the ventral face, with very limited ripples, suggesting that a small, soft hammer was used. The dorsal face is covered with several long, thin flaking scars running longitudinally, suggesting that this is a rejuvenation flake from a blade core. The …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small secondary greensand chert flake, probably dating from the Neolithic to early Bronze Age. The ventral face is convex at the proximal end, becoming concave towards the distal end. The flake has a fairly narrow butt and fairly diffuse bulb on the ventral face suggesting that a small, soft hammer was used. The dorsal face is highly convex and covered with small, long, thin flaking scars running longitudinally, suggesting that this is a rejuvenation flake from a blade core. There is a large flaking scar on the left-hand side of the dorsal face, just below the distal end, the majority …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small flint blade, made from a tertiary flake, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic. It has a narrow, stepped, butt and diffuse bulb on the ventral face, suggesting that a small soft hammer was used. There are three long, thin flaking scars on the dorsal face tapering to a pointed tip at the distal end. The flint is milky grey in colour and a certain amount of repatination appears to have taken place. The edges are fairly sharp, but notched in places due to plough damage, etc.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint blade, made from a secondary flake, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic. Both ends of the blade have snapped off and are missing. The remains of a diffuse bulb on the ventral face and discreet rippling suggest that a soft hammer was used. The dorsal face has three long flaking scars, but shows no evidence of further retouch. Two small patches of pebble cortex remain on the dorsal face. The flint is light grey in colour with patches of milky repatination.

Small flint blade, made from a tertiary flake, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic. The dorsal face has two long thin flaking scars. There is possibly some very limited retouch along the left-hand edge of the dorsal face. However, this could equally represent later plough damage following deposition. Indeed, the blade is heavily plough damaged and either end has broken away, suggesting that it was originally longer. The flint is light grey in colour with milky repatination in places on both the dorsal and ventral faces.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint side and end scraper of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The scraper is formed on a tertiary flake of dark brown-grey flint, flecked with white in places. The flake is sub-retangular in form, but rounded at the distal end and is slightly curved in profile (when looking at it from the side). The ventral face is unworked, with a large butt and prominent ripple lines suggesting that a large, hard hammer was used. A small portion of the proximal end may have broken away following deposition, however, as the break there is fresh and sharp still. The dorsal face has a larg…

A scraper or knife of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The implement is sub-rectangular in form. The ventral face is smooth and unworked, apart from a few removals at the proximal end. The dorsal face has a long ridge running longitudinally, slightly to the right of the centre. On the right side of this a small amount of cortex remains, whilst to the left of this a large flake has been removed creating a sharp edge. Semi-abrupt, long, subparallel retouch can be seen on the edge of the proximal end and along the right edge of the dorsal face. The flint is mid grey-brown in co…

Flint microlith point probably of Mesolithic date. Tertiary flake. The microlith is long thin and slightly curved, blunt at the proximal end and pointed at the distal. There is a diffuse bulb on the ventral face and two long flaking scars on the dorsal with a ridge down the centre. The flint is light brown in colour with a milky patina. The edges have been slightly retouched, becoming saw-like. Patination on these suggests that this is the result of deliberate working rather than later damage.

Flint blade, probably dating to the Mesolithic. The blade is long and thin. It has three flaking scars on the dorsal face. Both ends have been snapped leaving them blunt. There is a small notch missing on the right edge of the ventral face at the proximal end. Whether this was produced deliberately or is later damage is unclear. The flint is light milky brown in colour.

Flint scraper, probably of upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic date. The object is long and thin in shape. The ventral face has a fairly pronounced bulb and is slightly concave, meaning that both ends of the object curve downwards slightly when viewed from the side. The butt is fairly wide. The dorsal face is sub triangular in section at the distal end, becoming flatter towards the proximal end. It is covered with several long, thin flaking scars. There are a few small removals at the proximal end and a large, wide flaking scar at the distal end. A portion of smooth orangey-brown pebble …

Flint core rejuvenation flake found together with large collection of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age flint tools and flintworking debris dispersed over a field. The object is curves downwards at both ends slightly when viewed from the side. There are three long, thin flaking scars on the dorsal face. A small amount of cortex remains at the distal end. The flint is slight grey in colour with a matt, milky patina. The edges are slightly rolled in places. The thin flaking scars suggests that it has been removed from a core that was used to make small blades and therefore it is likely to b…
