A lithic implement of prehistoric date. The object is triangular in plan and is a light creamy brown colour. Ron Cowell, Curator of Prehistoric Archaeology, Museum of Liverpool notes: Triangular piece of miscellaneous-type flint I haven't seen much of in the region. There is some possible working around the thinner butt end, with a vertical break on the reverse side removing where the bulb of percussion may have been. There are some longitudinal fine scars along the right hand side, although difficult to tell whether these were put on before the piece was removed from the nodule or…

A grey flint, possibly a naturally created blank but with signs of surface working at one edge, perhaps to aid holding or even hafting, and retouch and damage along the longer continuous edge. The object is sub-oval in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The retouch along the long edge is short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt. Dimensions: 30mm in length, 11mm in width, 11mm thick, 4.60g Ron Cowell, Curator of Prehistoric Archaeology, Museum of Liverpool notes: This suggests a cutting type tool which would fit most easily into the following technology. The flint belongs to…

A small flint flake, possibly a borer, with abrupt retouch along the mesial portion of the right edge with relatively long scars. The flint increases in thickness on this side toward the proximal end, where there is evidence of a fracture/breakage. There is also semi-abrupt short retouch along the opposite edge on both faces, perpendicular to that of the other side and meeting in a point. From the ventral face, the point at the distal end is broken, with the top missing, and retouch on the left side is more abrupt with some extremely fine retouch present near to the promixal end. Cort…

A small lithic implement of uncertain date. The flint is sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section with an inverted triangular shaped profile. The ventral (lower) face is smooth with a few ripples and a low bulb of percussion. The dorsal (upper) face is faceted due to the removal of several possible blades. Short, parallel, low angled retouch can be seen along the shortest edge of the object. The flint is toffee-coloured. Dimensions: 12mm in length, 15mm in width, 4mm thick, 1.2g

Flint implement dating from the Neolithic to early Bronze Age, (2500-1500BC). The object is sub-oval in plan and sub triangular in cross-section. A light brown cortex remains on one face of the object. A few chips are missing from the long edge with no cortex however it is uncertain whether these are deliberate due to their coarseness. The implement has been made from toffee brown coloured flint and is probably a waste flake.

Flint blade dating to the early Prehistoric period, c5000-3000BC. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and triangular in cross-section. The lower (ventral) face of the object is smooth. Two long flakes have been removed to create the upper (dorsal) face of the object on which small ripples can be seen. Each long edge of the object has been lightly retouched with fine serrations and it was therefore probably used as an implement. The implement has been made from mid-grey flint.

Reddish brown flint blade. Probably local to the area where it was found, originating from the glacial clay or perhaps river gravels. It is a by-product of the shaping of a larger irregular lump of flint, so that regular shaped pieces can be taken off it to work into tools. The longer than narrow, parallel sided shape is characterised as a blade. In some circumstances the blades are then 'retouched' by finely working the edge in a deliberate way to produce tools or sometimes they can be just used as they are without further working, for cutting or scraping. This one does not betra…

Flint implement dating from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period, (8300BC-2100BC). The object is sub-oval in plan and D-shaped in cross section. On one face of the object the cortex remains. The opposite face is covered in irregular facets. The pebble has been split in two, the force of which has probably caused the irregular breaks. It is however possible that the object was also utilised as a tool. The object is toffee brown in colour.

A small piece of flint of uncertain date. It is oval in plan and triangular in cross-section. The fragment has been water worn resulting in a gloss covering. This gloss makes the typical features of a struck flint very difficult to identify. The flint is a natural shape which occurs with broken fragments of flint, and it is not likely that it was decisively struck. The longest edge has been chipped. This may be due to ware while in the water or ice, however the fragment may also have been picked up and used at some stage. It has a toffee-brown patina.
