Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint tranchet adze or pick dating to the Mesolithic period (8300-4000 BC), similar to the so-called 'Thames Pick'. The pick has been made from a flint nodule and is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with both the butt end and the bladed cutting edge being slightly rounded; the pick tapers slowly from the butt end towards the blade. In section the pick is a pointed ovoid, with both butt and blade being thin and sharp and pointed in profile. The dorsal side of the pick has a high, off-centre longitudinal ridge, bevelled to each side due to flakes having been removed wi…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of three end-scrapers, dating to the Mesolithic period. Two of the scrapers are complete while a third is truncated. All three are made on secondary flakes and all have steep soft hammer retouching at the dorsal distal end. The colour of the flint varies from mottled blue-grey to brown. This style of scraper is usually associated with the Mesolithic period, dating from c. 10,000 - 4000 BC. These objects are part of a larger collection from what appears to be a multiphase site.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unfinished flint scraper, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic period. The scraper is made on tertiary flake, and has little soft-hammer retouch on the dorsal distal end and lateral; it has been suggested that this is a tool in production, as the retouch is not finished. It is also possible that the flake was discarded or rejected during manufacture. The colour of the flint varies from a light to mottled grey-blue. These objects are part of a larger collection from what appears to be a multiphase site.

A Mesolithic flint scraper made of a tertiary flake of a mid-brown flint. The scraper has retouch around both dorsal laterals and nose. The ventral surface is un-worked but retains the bulb of percussion. Part of the platform is also retained. Due to it's size this type of artefact is known as a thumbnail scraper and is typologically characteristic of the Mesolithic to early Neolithic period, c.6500-2500 BC.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flint flake on a secondary blade-like flake. The flint is dark brown and semi-translucent with approximately 40% cortex remaining on its dorsal surface. The bulb and platform appear to be missing due to a break at the proximal end however lines of percussion remain. The soft-hammer retouch is restricted to a 17mm length along the left dorsal lateral. It is fine and well executed. This informal tool likely dates from the late Mesolithic to Neolithic period, c. 6500-2100 BC.

A collection of flint tools and production debris dating to the Mesolithic period (8300-4000BC). The collection consists of 24 bladelets or microliths as well as one core and one core fragment. All of the pieces show long thin blade removals, a technology very characteristic of the Mesolithic period. The microlithis weigh a collective total of 28.1gms. The large core weighs 14.8gms and measures 20.92mm long and is 20.05mm at its widest. The core tapers from the platfrom at the top, almost down to a point at the distal end. The core fragment piece displays a number of microlith removal…

A straight backed piece of final upper palaeolithic or early mesolithic date, c. 40,000-6,000 BC. This object is part of a larger assemblage of blade and bladelet flakes and debitage microliths and some retouched pieces (see OXON-AB9254) found in the back garden of a house in Newbury during gardening activities. The straight-backed point is made on a secondary flake of a semi-translucent light brown flint. The point has concaved basal retouch, some very fine retouch on the right lateral edge and covering retouch along the straight back. The piece is in very good condition with no appa…

A complete flint microlith dating to the Mesolithic period (c. 10,000-4000 BC). The microlith is made on a light orange-brown flake, being semi-translucent at the proximal end. A complete but slightly damaged struck flint, a possible microdenticulate or a multi-tool of probable Mesolithic date (c. 10,000-4000 BC). The tool is formed on a blade-like secondary flake of mottled light and dark grey flint and retains c.5% cortex around the platform on the proximal dorsal end. Flake scars on the dorsal surface show previous removals. The platform and bulb is retained; the distal end of the tool appears broken and there has been some attempt at reworking the broken distal end. The dorsal surface bares abrupt retouch (backing?) along c.70% of the left lateral, fadin…

A flint microburin dating to the Mesolithic period (10,000-4001 BC). The microburin has been made on a mottled light bluish-grey flint with white calcification. A microburin is the waste formed when a notched blade is broken to form a geometric microlith. The notch is clearly visible on one lateral of the dorsal side.

Sixteen (16) fragments of debitage and/or waste flakes with a combined weight of 17gms. Most have a whitish or bluish-white patina covering a grey core, suggesting a chalk downland source, possible towards the Ridgeway. These were found in association with many other lithics (see links below). These are suggested to date from the late Mesolithic through the Neolithic era.

A collection of thirteen (13) core preparation fragments, mostly primary removals. All are probably Mesolithic - Neolithic in date and have a combined weight of 96.4gms. These lithics were found in association with other artefacts of a similar date. As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland origin as the flint source.

A total of eight (8) primary flakes removed during core preperation. Two display hinge fractures, and all have bulbs of percussion. No additional working or retouch is evident. The combined weight of these primary flakes is 52.1gms. These fragments would normally be difficult to date should they have been found in isolation, but the associated lithic implements suggest that they date from the late Mesolithic to the Neolithic periods (6500 - 2100 BC). As with the majority of the assemblage, the grey-blue core and white cortex suggests a chalk downland origin as the flint source.
