Record ID: BERK-E92BCD
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An unfinished flint scraper, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic period. The scraper is made on tertiary flake, and has little soft-hammer retouch on the dorsal distal end and lateral; it has been suggested that this is a tool in production, as the retouch is not finished. It is also possible that the flake was discarded or rejected during manufacture. The colour of the flint varies from a light to mottled grey-blue.
These objects are part of a larger collection from what appears to be a multiphase site.

A collection of three end-scrapers, dating to the Mesolithic period. Two of the scrapers are complete while a third is truncated. All three are made on secondary flakes and all have steep soft hammer retouching at the dorsal distal end. The colour of the flint varies from mottled blue-grey to brown. This style of scraper is usually associated with the Mesolithic period, dating from c. 10,000 - 4000 BC.

A Mesolithic flint scraper made of a tertiary flake of a mid-brown flint. The scraper has retouch around both dorsal laterals and nose. The ventral surface is un-worked but retains the bulb of percussion. Part of the platform is also retained. Due to it's size this type of artefact is known as a thumbnail scraper and is typologically characteristic of the Mesolithic to early Neolithic period, c.6500-2500 BC.
