Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An unfinished flint or chert tranchet axe of Mesolithic date. The axe is knapped from a heavily patinated flint or chert whose surface is mainly a mottled brown/yellow colour. Where there is recent damage the colour is a mottled light grey. In plan the axe is a sub-oval and is a sub-oval in section. The dorsal and ventral faces are covered with negative flake scars, but there is not a bifacial flake at the blade end, therefore it is considered to be an unfinished axe (Phil Watson pers comm). It measures 101.11mm length, 43.21mm width, and is 23.74mm thick. The fragment weighs 128g. Th…

A knapped flint scraper. The flint is a mid to dark brown colour. In plan it is a sub-drop shape. The dorsal face (the face with the most scars) has retouch around the side and lower edges, the base of the drop shape. The retouch is formed by long, narrow parallel negative scars. The angle of the retouch is c. 45 degrees. The ventral face (smooth face) has no retouch, but has three negative scars which may be more recent. The scraper, with the striking platform at the top, is 32.07mm long and is 23.51mm wide. It weighs 7.43g. The scraper probably dates to the Neolithic or Bronze Ag

Late Mesolithic to early Neolithic (c. 8300 to 3300BC) probable scraper: The scraper appears to be knapped from a secondary or tertiary flint flake. The flake is an irregular sub- oval. The proximal end has been removed and along this edge, on the dorsal and ventral surfaces, semi-abrupt retouch which includes three notches. The dorsal surface has at least four negative scars which are at varying angles. The ventral surface has conchoidal ripples. The distal end has also evidence of retouch forming a notch. The scraper is knapped from a mottled mid grey colour which has a slightly wax…

Probable Mesolithic to early Bronze Age (8000 - 1000BC) retouched flake: The flint flake is triangular and knapped from a matte mottled light grey flint or chert. The ventral surface does not have a bulb or percussion and conchoidal ripples are not visible. The dorsal surface has a convex surface with abrupt, short, re-touch occurring long one edge. Another edge has two small notches knapped from the dorsal surface. The flake measures 27.73mm long, 23.3mm wide, 7.52mm thick and weighs 3.68g. Retouched flakes are difficult to date as they are present throughout prehistory. Thus,…

Mesolithic to Neolithic stone pebble hammer or mace head. The pebble hammer is sub-triangular in both plan and an elongated pointed oval in profile. The pebble, identified by Dr. Jon Radley (Warwickshire Museum) is a hard sandstone, probably quartz-cemented. Due to the 'hardness' it resembles a 'Bunter quartzite' pebble. These are river worn pebbles of hard sandstone that are widely distributed throughout the Midlands. The pebble is a mottled yellow/brown colour and is smooth. It is probable that the shape of the pebble has been augmented by polishing. The central shaft hole is a wide…

A Mesolithic or early Neolithic flint bladelet. The bladelet does not appear to have been subject to further retouch after having been struck from its core. It is trapezoidal in shape and the distal and proximal ends are missing. It measures 14.27mm long, 9.88mm wide, 2.53mm thick and weighs 0.3 grams. The flint is white to pale grey in colour due to its patination. The blade dates to the Mesolithic to early Neolithic periods (-8300 - -2900).

It measures 14.8mm long, 3.06mm wide, 3.19mm thick and weighs less than 0.1grams.
