A flint lithic implement, a probable chopper of Mesolithic date, about 9000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed from a secondary chunk ofmottled light grey flint which is opaque and has one face covered in cortex. There are also large chalky inclusions. It is sun-rectangular in plan, wedge shaped at one end, and sub-rectangular in scross-section. There are at least five removals from the tapering end. These are struck towards the main body of the object and form a unifacial working edge (as distinct from a chopping tool which is bifacial). Onlt the one end of the tool is worked. Examples of ch…

A flint lithic implement, possibly a microlithic tool, of probable Mesolithic date, dating from about 9000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of mettled brown and grey flint, with speckles of patina. It is sub-triangular in plan, with a point in the centre of the left side, and concave edges leading to it. The distal and proximal ends are rounded. It is sub-triangular in section, with a single dorsal ridge along the flake. Removals at the proximal end make it rounded, most of the removals appear to be on the ventral face, but worked from the proximal end towards the rest f…

A flint lithic implement; a retouched blade of probable Mesolithic, about 9000 BC - 4000 BC. The implement is formed on mottled grey flint with a large dark grey inclusoin and small white inclusions. It is not patinated, but is mainly opaque. The blade is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in section. There is short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch along the left edge. The blade is 50.6mm long, 9.5mm wide and 5.1mm thick. 2.9g.

A flint lithic implement, probably used as a microlithic graver, of Mesolithic date, about 10,000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary patinated flint blade. It is sub-rectangular in plan with an oblique distal end and is wedge shaped in section. It has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch on the distal end forming a point at the left distal corner which could have been used as a graver. There are also removals along the right side and at the right proximal corner, two longitudinal removals along the right edge form a wedge shaped point which could also have been used as a graver. …

A flint lithic implement, possibly used as a scraper and burin, of probably Mesolithic date, about 10,000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary tan flint blade which is not patinated. It is sub-rectangular in plan with an oblique proximal end and, and has a double dorsal ridge making it trapezoidal in section. It has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch on the proximal end which could have been used as a scraper. This working is on a truncated end that completely removes the bulb of percussion. The point formed on the left proximal corner could have been used as a burin or graver. T…

A flint lithic implement, a multi-functional tool of probably Mesolithic date (about 9000 BC - 4000 BC). The multi-function tool is formed on mottled dark grey flint which is semi-translucent and not patinated. It is pointed with a rounded proximal end in plan and D shaped in section. The tool is tertiary with fine, low-angle retouch shaping it, particularly at the point and proximal left side. At the point there are removals from the end on the dorsal face, and on the ventral face, removals from the end and right side. The distal end seems to have been used as a narrow scraper, and t…

A flint flake which has been utilised as a tool causing edge damage, and which has a possible burination or deliberately formed point for piercing. The flake is sub-oval and ic completely patinated to white. The edge damage is on the right side and the burination on the left at the proximal end where a removal from the ventral face has left the projecting point. It is Mesolithic to Neolithic in date.

A flint multi-purpose tool probably dating from the Mesolithic period. It combines a scraper and a burin. It is a sub-rectangular flake of milky gray tan flint. Retouch on the distal end of the left side forms the burin at the distal left corner. There are removals from both the dorsal and ventral faces here. The distal end of the right edge has been retouch with fine abrupt removals from the ventral face to form a scraping edge. There is also evidence of platform preparation.

A flint blade. The flint is black, with a white cortex remaining, The cutting edge is on the distal end looking from the dorsal side. There is some natural damage on the blade edge, which could be mistaken for fine retouching. However the damage is not precise enough to be deliberate reworking. This type of blade is not diagnostic and therefore a date is uncertain. It could possibly be from the Mesolithic given its small size. It measures 23.6mm x 11.6mm x 4.3mm, weighing 1.31g.

A fairly small flint blade. The cutting edge runs along the right edge, looking from the proximal dorsal end. Concoidal fractures are present on the ventral side and the dorsal side is covered with cortex still. The cortex is a grey, pale brown colour. It measures 29.3mm x 12.7mm x 4.7mm, weighing 2.16g. The blade could possibly be Mesolithic given its narrow size, although it is difficult to say.

A flint retouched blade or possible knife. This microlith tool is Mesolithic and has fine retouch on both lateral edges, on both dorsal and ventral. This is a tertiary flake with no cortex and there is a possible worked distal end which could have been a scraper. It measures 58.8mm x 18.7mm x 3.9mm, weighing 6.64g.

A flint blade with a light grey hue. The blade is thin and broad with lateral strips knapped off. There is evidence of retouch, possibly down both lateral edges on the dorsal face. The object is twice as long as it is wide, classing it as a blade. It measures 34.4mm x 17.2mm x 3.3mm, weighing 2.28g. The broad size makes this either Mesolithic or early Neolithic.

A flint tool; a denticulared blade dating from the Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic period. It is 54.3mm long, 23.3mm wide and 6mm thick. It is oval in plan. The blade is a tertiary flake which is worked on the left edge into two deep notches or denticulats with abrupt retouch. The right edge is backed. This tool was probably used like a saw. The flint is mid brown and opaque with a large white inclusion on the ventral face. A similar example can be seen on page 110 of Prehistoric Flintwork by Chris Butler.

A flint piercer dating from the Mesolithic period. The flint is sub-rectangular but tapers to a point at the distal end. It is 36.2mm long, 16mm wide and 4.4mm thick. The tool is formed on a tertiary flake which has itself been removed from a larger flake (there are two bulbs of percussion). There is evidence of platform preparation. There is abrupt retouch along the right hand lateral side and at the distal end on the left side forming a blunted point at the distal end. Mesolithic awls and piercers are generally smaller than similar tools in other periods of prehistory and are quite r…
