Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
Mesolithic trachet axehead made from a flint nodule, original cortex present on one end, the other surfaces are covered by light recortication, covering an opaque, grey, flint. The general section is D shaped with slightly convex underside. The implement is curved along its length and the flaking is coarse, the exception being the area around the transverse cutting edge where some long parallel flakes have been removed. The cutting edge was formed by the removal of single flakes on both faces; the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes. A Mesolithic date seems likely. Length 194mm, Width 51mm, T…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
Mesolithic tranchet axe made from a flint nodule, cortex present on one end and on a small area of the side, the other surfaces are covered by light recortication, over an opaque, grey, flint. The general section is lozenge shaped, the flaking is coarse, bifacial flaking. The cutting edge appears damaged but was formed by the removal of single flakes on both faces; the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes. There is a narrowing of the axe around its mid-point which forms a waist. A Mesolithic date seems likely. Length 158mm, Width 50mm, Thickness 42mm, Mass 387.4g

Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead, no cortex present, all surfaces are recorticated over what appears to be a poor quality, mixed grey, flint. The implement.has a lozenge section, keeled on both sides, the flaking is coarse. The cutting edge was formed by the removal of the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes but has suffered some minor damage in antiquity. Both side edges are battered and show bands of hackly facture which appear to have been an original feature. .Length 144mm, Width 55mm, Thickness 35mm, Mass 240.6g

Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead, small area of cortex present, no recortication, the flint can be seen to be a poor quality, mixed grey and off-white and opaque.. The implement.has a lozenge section, keeled on both sides, the flaking is coarse. The cutting edge was formed by the removal of the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes but some flakes have been removed either by retouch or as result of damage during use. Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead, small area of cortex present on one side, full recortication, all surfaces now white. The implement.has a lozenge section, keeled on both sides but tending to oval towards the cutting edge, the flaking is finer than is usually seen on these implements. The cutting edge was formed by the removal of the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes. Length 118mm, Width 50mm, Thickness 38mm, Mass 216.1g

Mesolithic tranchet axehead, no cortex present, light recortication, the flint appears to have been mixed grey and translucent. Lozenge shaped section, flaking is coarse but a regular form has been achieved. There appears to be traces of battering along the two sides. The cutting edge was formed by the removal of the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes. Length 115mm, Width 42mm, Thickness 30mm, Mass 158.8g

This object resembles a small handaxe and it might be interpreted as a Late Neolithic 'ovate'. However, there are indications that the object represents the truncated remains of a Mesolithic tranchet axehead. Its section, with the broad edge being sharpened and the pointed end blunt, is the reverse of what would be expected on a Late Neolithic ovate. It is not recorticated and the worn state of its surface suggests that it pre-dates the late Neolithic. The flint is opaque and mixed buff and light brown. Sharpening was not carried out by means of the removal of tranchet flake but by re…

Flint adze fragment, probabley from a Mesolithic tranchet type. The implement has a trapezoid/ keeled section with one flat face from which the other two faces were worked by the removal of large flakes. The flat face is curved (slightly concave) along its length. Sharpening was achieved by the removal of large flakes from the cutting edge which has suffered some damage, probably as a result of use. Partical recortication on a light grey, opaque flint. Small patch of cortex on flat face. Length 113mm, Width 43mm, Thickness 31mm, Mass 163.6g

Scraper made from flint, opaque, dark grey, recorticated, bulb of percussion low. Retouch (invasive, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt) around end. Further retouch has been carried out at the proximal end, this cuts through the recortication showing it to be a later addition. Length 56mm, Width 31mm, Thickness 11mm, Mass 16.51g. These scrapers are difficult to date and must be assigned to a wide range.
