Object type: FLAKED AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
Flaked axe/adze head, made from opaque, mixed grey flint, light recortication, area of cortex on dorsal face, the ventral face consisting of a single flake scar with a low bulb of percussion. The object was flaked from the ventral face to produce, away from the cortex, a keeled section with some battering along edges. The cutting edge is damaged making description impossible. This object is difficult to date but is likely to be Mesolithic. Length 115mm, Width 42mm, Thickness 18mm, Mass 107.5g.

Lithic implement, possibly a fabricator. Made from a recorticated, mixed grey, opaque flint with a band of cortex running down its length. Section keeled and flaked on all all sides, some battering along edges. One end sharply pointed with a triangular section, the other rounded. This object best described as a fabricator and the style of the flaking suggests a Mesoithic date. Length 117mm, Width 24mm, Thickness 23mm, Mass 77.1g.

Object type: FLAKED AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
Flaked flint adze, possibly a 'Hassocks Adze'. Roughly shaped from flint, the colour of which is hidden by recortication but likely to be opaque, mixed grey with an area of cortex. Flattened D shaped section, the flat face extensively flaked. Cutting edge formed by the removal of large, semi-abrupt flakes. The characteristic battering is absent from the sides but one side of the object has been flaked to produce a narrowed waist. This object resembles a Mesolithic 'Hassocks Adze' (Butler, 103, Fig. 42). Length 169mm, Width 92mm, Thickness 42mm, Mass 600.8g.

Flaked flint axe, or 'Hassocks Adze', roughly shaped from flint, the details of which are hidden by recortication. Keeled section, the flat face of which may be partly natural. Pick-like cutting edge formed by the removal of large, semi-abrupt flakes. The object narrows at its mid-point to produce a 'waist'.and the shaping has been supplimented by two areas of battering. This object resembles a Mesolithic 'Hassocks Adze' (Butler, 103, Fig. 42). Length 174mm, Width 50mm, Thickness 33mm, Mass 408.9g.

Workflow stage: Published
Flaked flint axe, roughly flaked from a poor quality, opaque, mixed grey flint. Cortex covers part of one surface surface and full recortication has occured. Lozenge section formed by coarse flaking supplimented by battering. Cutting edge formed by the removal of large, semi-abrupt flakes. The object narrows around its mid-point to produce a 'waist'. This object lacks the characteristic 'tranchet' sharpening but a Mesolithic date is likely. Length 127mm, Width 51mm, Thickness 48mm, Mass 292.0g.

Flaked flint axe, or more accurately, adze. Roughly flaked from a poor quality, opaque, mixed grey flint with cortex covering much of the dorsal surface and full recortication. Keeled section with a flat lower face from which the two converging faces were flaked, the junction marked by battering. The adze narrows around its mid-point to produce a 'waist'. This object has the characteristics of a Mesolithic 'Hassock's adze' (Barber, 2005, 103, Fig. 420). Length 165mm, Width 54mm, Thickness 39mm, Mass 542.6g.

Flaked flint pick, lozenge shaped section with on face curved, the other keeled. The implement narrows around its mid-point. It was flaked from an opaque, mixed grey flint with some recortication. The flaking is coarse and supplimented by battering down the edges. The flaking at the ends is less coarse with the removal of long, semi-abrupt flakes. Both ends have been damaged, pieces being broken away, probably during use. Features of the implement, such as the waisted section and the edge battering can be found on 'Hassocks Adzes' suggesting a Mesolithic date. Length 124mm, Width 47m…

Flaked flint pick or adze, section plano-convex, tapering to point at one end and slightly waisted near its mid-point. It was flaked from a poor quality, opaque, mixed grey flint with areas of cortex on both faces and some recortication. The flaking is coarse and supplimented by battering on the two edges. The tip has been shaped by the removal of long, semi-abrupt flakes. This find resemebles a 'Hassocks adze' in both form and technology and a Mesolithic date seems likely. Workflow stage: Published
Flaked flint axehead of unusual form. The object is roughly shaped from a poor quality, opaque, light grey flint with small area of original cortex and a crystal filled cavity. Recortication has occured. Rectangular section tapering towards the two ends, one end is battered suggesting that the implement has seen some uset. This object is diffucult to date and its crudity need not be an indicator of an early date. While Its shape resembles that of an Early Bronze Age Battle Axe the flint would have been difficult to perforate and its poor quality would rule out extensive working. The t…
