Record ID: DEV-7F8CE1
Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Mesolithic flint microlith, probably dating to c. 8,000-4,000 BC. A tertiary flake of mottled grey/brown flint, lenticular in plan and with one point truncated by a natural break. One edge of the microlith exhibits short, semi-abrupt, scalar retouch along its length on the dorsal face. Dimensions: Length 15.2mm; width 6.6mm; thickness 1.7mm; weight 0.22g. Part of a small assemblage of flint found in the same field, comprising of records: DEV-7F8CE1, DEV-094CF7, DEV-7EDBED and DEV-0A9D0C. The group includes diagnostically mesolithic material (DEV-7F8CE1, a microlith…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Chert end scraper of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date, c. 8,000-2,400 BC. Worked from a sub-rectangualr secondary flake of orange greensand chert, with cortex surviving at the proximal end of the dorsal face, as well as on the striking platform. A diffuse bulb of percussion is present at the proximal end of the ventral face, a reflection more of the raw material than knapping technique. Short, Abrupt, scalar retouch is exhibited along the distal edge of the dorsal face. Dimensions: length 45.9mm; width 51.5mm; thickness 16.3mm; weight 45.83g. Part of a small assemblage of…

Record ID: DEV-811ACF
Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint bladelet of uncertain prehistoric date, potentially later Mesolithic, c. 8000-4000 BC. The bladelet is a tertiary flake of patinated grey/white flint, sub-rectangular in plan and triangular in cross section. The striking platform survives at the proximal end with a diffuse bulb of percussion, two main parallel removal scars survive on the dorsal face, with no evidence of retouch. Dimensions: length 24.9mm; width 7.7mm; thickness 3.2mm; weight 0.58g. Dating a single undiagnostic flake with any degree of certainty is impossible, as despite its size and sub-parallel removal…

County: Devon

An incomplete flint bladelet of probable prehistoric date, possibly late late Mesolithic, c. 7000-4000 BC. A tertiary bladelet of brown-grey flint missing both its proximal and distal ends to natural breaks. There is no indication of retouch, although the scars from 3 parallel, longitudinal removals survive on the dorsal face. Dimensions: length 18.0mm; width 9.4mm; thickness 2.5mm; weight 0.54g. Dating a single undiagnostic flake with any degree of certainty is impossible, as despite its size and sub-parallel removals, such features may not be intentional. With this in mind a b…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic chert tranchet axehead probably dating to c. AD 10,000-4,000. Of a mottled, rough grey brown chert, with cortex surviving centrally on both faces, covering c. 10-20% on both. The axehead is sub-rectangular in plan, with rounded ends. The butt end is 69.2mm wide, narrowing below this into a slight waisted section, 60.7mm, and subsequently expanding to a maximum of 73.5mm from where it tapers into the crescentic cutting edge. It is 52.2mm thick at its maximum, roughly in line with the waist, from where it tapers in both directions. The core has been irregularly bifacially w…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A ultilised flint bladelet of probable Mesolithic or Neolthic date, c. 9000-2400 BC. The tertiary bladelet is of a pale grey flint; long, narrow and sub-rectangular in plan and subrectangular in cross section, with the distal end lost to a natural break. Only a small section of the striking platform survives, alongside a relatively diffuse bulb of percussion. The ventral face is unworked, but two parallel removals survive on the dorsal face, both struck from the same direction as the overall removal. Both scars are truncated by retouch (short, sub-parallel, abrupt) running along both …

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of three peices of notched debitage of likely Mesolithic or Neolithic date, c. 9000-2400 BC. Thre group represents two types of flint, and all exhibit evidence for a blade or blade-like industry and with retouch forming a notch on one edge. 1. Complete tertiary blade of translucent pink/beige flint. Striking platform and bulb of percussion, with bulbar scar, survive at proximal end. Three parallel, blade-like negative removal scars run along the dorsal face, all struck from the same direction. No evidence of retouch, except for a small notch pressure flaked from ventra…
