Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two struck flint flakes of undiagnostic prehistoric date, c. 8000-1500 BC. The first is a squat tertiary piece on relatively coarse grained greyish flint, a previous hinge negative on its dorsal face and a hard-hammer bulb of percussion on its ventral face. Length down percussion axis: 40.48mm, maximum width: 31.49mm wide, thickness at midpoint: 7.16mm. Weight: 11.61g. The second, a small piece of irregular tertiary shatter on dark fine-grained blackish flint. Length down percussion axis: 35.47mm, width at midpoint: 9.5mm, thickness at midpoint: 3.96mm. Weight:1.91g.

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint flake of probable later Mesolithic to Neolithic date, c. 6000-3500 BC. Struck from a core of tan-coloured unpatinaed flint, it demonstrates a plain lenticular platform with a prominent lipped bulb of percussion inferring hard hammer detachment. On its dorsal face are two blade-like negatives, while there is some minor edge damage towards its distal end. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 37.48mm long, 20.10mm at its widest point, and 4.51mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 4.69g.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint blade core of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date, c. 6000-3000 BC. It is broadly cuboidal in form, demonstrating at least ten negative blade removals on its outer surfaces. Both ends have been rejuvenated and used as platforms, with opposing pairs of removals occuring. One platform is flanked by a patch of cortex which now covers c. 10-15% of the entire object's surface, while the other demonstrates a crushed area abutting several failed blade removals with overhanging step fractures resulting from an inadequate knapping angle. Preserved in fairly fresh condition wi…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Four knapped flint blade-cores of probable Mesolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. Each core is described in turn. 1. Sub-cylindrical blade core on a piece of blackish blue flint, mostly still covered with cortex. The core demonstrates bipolar working from either end, with one platform partially broken away due to a large hinge-fracture. Numerous opposing blade negatives are visible on both ends of the core. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 58.27mm long, 26.36mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 66.88g. 2. Sub-cylindrical blade core on piece of yellowish brown flint, some cor…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete struck flint blade of probable Mesolithic or Neolithic date, c. 8000-3000 BC. Only the mesial section remains, the proximal and distal ends truncated in neat fractures that may have occurred during the blade's detachment from its core. Rectangular in plan and struck from a core of mottled greyish white flint, it retains two dorsal arrises and parallel sides, while the ventral face demonstrates prominent rings of percussion suggesting hard-hammer detachment. Preserved in relatively fresh condition with only minor edge damage to its edges, it survives to a length of 33.29m…

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint adze of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. The adze is of small size, being broadly triangular in plan with a very prominent dorsal arrise running down one face. By contrast the opposing face is much flatter, though displays a large patch of cortex close to the original cutting edge-the butt of the tool also being cortical. Lateral long removals of retouch down the edges of the piece probably reflect a combination of hard and soft hammer work, an attempt at a tranchet removal (unsuccessful) seemingly visible on one face. Manufactured on a pri…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint adze dating to the Mesolithic period, c. 8000-4000 BC. It is broadly lenticular in plan and plano-convex in section, with a slightly tapered butt, expanded sides, rectilinear cutting edge and flattened underside. Manufactured originally from a large piece of blackish brown flint with some green and yellow mottling, it has been bifacially worked- both faces demonstrate highly invasive removals that have removed practically all of the original flake surfaces, though those on the underside of the adze are thinner, wider and low-angle, suggestive of preferential u…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint adze dating to the Mesolithic period, c. 8000-4000 BC. The adze is broadly sub-rectangular in form and 'D' shaped in section, with a slightly rounded 'crested' outer surface and flattened inner face. It has been manufactured on raw material of an uncertain colour, which is now extremely heavily weathered with a deep brown mottled patina. The adze has been bifacially worked, with invasive hard-hammer and soft-hammer removals visible on both faces, with the result that very little of the original support surface survives. The butt is pointed and slightly rounded…

A fragment originating from a knapped flint tranchet adze of probable Mesolithic date, c. 6000-4000 BC. The fragment consists the butt end of the adze, broken around a quarter of the way down the original object in an old, patinated oblique hinge fracture. The fragment is broadly semi-circular in plan, with a flattened underside and prominent dorsal arrise on its upper face-giving it an overall triangular section. Almost the entirety of the original support surface has been removed by secondary working, which takes the form of highly invasive bifacial removals-probably detached via me…
