Knapped chert tertiary blade. Struck off prepared platform. Bulb of percussion at proximal end. Snap at distal end which may, or may not be deliberate. Triangular in section with aris on dorsal face from previous paralel removals from same platform. Chipping down edges but no definite retouch. The piece is 29.6mm long, 10.8mm wide and 4.2mm thick; it weighs 1.52 grams. the chert is very dark brown with paler mottling.
Probably Mesolithic or possibly Early Neolithic in date, 10,000-3300 BC.

Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Published
Proximal end of a thin knapped flint blade with a large, deliberate notch, probably a precursor to being snapped to form a microlith of Mesolithic date, 9000-4000 BC. The piece has a very small bulb of percussion on the ventral face and two parallel aris running down the length of the dorsal face from previous parallel removals. The right edge (as seen from the dorsal face) is notched about half way along with abrupt retouch worked from the ventral face, the retouch extends towards the proximal end. The opposite edge has regularly spaced small chips from the distal face giving a serra…

Three pieces of knapped chert debitage. One mid brown, two dark brown/black, all tertiary pieces, one complete and two the distal ends of longer blades. All appear to come from a blade core where regular long, parallel blades have been removed from the same direction. A1 is missing part of the distal end to a snap. A2 ends in a hinge fracture and has a possible area of short, semi-abrupt, scalar retouch along the middle part of the right edge on the ventral face. A3 is complete.
These pieces suggest a fine blade industry in which pieces of blade are being utilised and possibly reto…

Eight pieces of flint debitage, several with possible retouch. Colours from opaque buff to dark grey-black including mottled pieces (possibly some from weathering). No primary, five secondary and three tertiary pieces. At least five (the top row plus piece photographed seperately) are the product of a blade industry showing parallel removals of fine, thin, narrow pieces off a prepared core. The first three plus the additional piece are broken sections of blades and the first two may have very short scalar semi-abrupt retouch down one edge. On A2 where the work is on the dorsal face th…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published
Mesolithic or early Neolithic chert blade, possibly a core refreshment flake. The piece has been struck off a core with part of the platform remaining at the proximal end. There is a prominent bulb and ripples on the ventral face. On the dorsal face aris and percussion ripples suggest previous parallel removals. It thickens at the distal end into a triangular piece, possible the tip of the core. It is a mid buff-orange chert. 42.1mm long, 17.2mm wide, 11.1mm thick and 6.06 grams in weight.

Butt end of a chert axe or possibly adze of later Mesolithic to early Neolithic date, 6500-2900 BC. It is oval ion section and has part of an S-shaped curve in profile. The butt is rounded. The tool has been shaped by removal or large scalar flakes around the edge on both sides. Down the centre of one side is a large area of creamy cortex covering c.40% of the face. On the other some flakes have been removed in the centre, adjacent to the break. One at least appears to have been removed after the break or possibly as part of the break, it is not clear if damage to this area could be f…

Greensand chert microlith, formed from part of a blade or bladelet and dating to the Mesolithic period (8,300 to 3,500 BC). There is cortex covering c.10 of the surface at the distal end and the edges have short, scalar abrupt retouch down their entire lengths on the dorsal face apart from the proximal end of the right edge which appears unretouched. The proximal end and bulb of percussion have been removed. It is 21.5mm long, 7.3mm wide and 2.4mm thick and weighs 0.45 grams. It is pale brown-green chert.
