Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small conical blade / bladelet core of Mesolithic date. The piece has c.15% cortex surviving in a strip down one side but the other sides show repeated removals of small blades. At least one was taken off the current platform while others were taken off a previous platform when the piece was longer. It has been worked down to the smallest amount possible showing an effort to fully utilise the available material. It is dark grey flint with paler areas. It is 27.2mm tall, 19.5 by 18.9mm at the platform and weighs 11.43 grams.

Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Probable Microlith of later Mesolithic date. The piece has a sharp triangular point with an irregular, accidental, break at the wide end. The piece is made from the centre of a tertiary blade with the point towards the proximal end and a broken distal end. The dorsal face is highly arched with evidence for previous removals. There is short, scalar to sub-parallel abrupt to semi-abrupt retouch around the tip of the point and down both sides as far as the break. The flint is dark grey with paler mottling. It is 23.2mm long, 11.3mm wide and 3.6mm thick; it weighs 1.08.

Butt end of a chert axe or possibly adze of later Mesolithic to early Neolithic date, 6500-2900 BC. It is oval ion section and has part of an S-shaped curve in profile. The butt is rounded. The tool has been shaped by removal or large scalar flakes around the edge on both sides. Down the centre of one side is a large area of creamy cortex covering c.40% of the face. On the other some flakes have been removed in the centre, adjacent to the break. One at least appears to have been removed after the break or possibly as part of the break, it is not clear if damage to this area could be f…

Three fragments of flint blades with retouch of later Mesolithic date.
1. Snapped middle section of a secondary blade. c.25% of the dorsal face is covered in cortex running down the right side. The distal end has a hinge fracture but at the proximal end the break seems to be from a retouched notch created in the left edge with short, parallel, abrupt retouch. A second, shallower, notch has been made in the middle of the left edge on the dorsal face, above the first, again with short, abrupt, parallel retouch. This suggests the blade was being worked to produce microliths. It is dark…

Proximal end of a Portland chert blade probably dating to the Late Mesolithic (6500-3500 BC). The blade has a prominent bulb of percusison and was formed off a prepared platform. Parallel arises and percussion waves on the dorsal face suggest removal of parallel blades from the core. There are two retouched notches in one side; one by the break worked from the dorsal face and one half way down created from the ventral face. These suggest an attempt was being made to separate the proximal end and bulb of percussion (microburin) from the remainder of the blade. Medium to dark grey in co…

Six proximal fragments of bladelets dating to the Late Mesolithic (6500-3500 BC). All have snapped distal ends and a notch part way down one edge suggesting an attempt was being made to separate the proximal end and bulb of percussion (microburin) from the remainder of the blade. In some cases notches and chips on the edge opposite the notch may also be part of this process. Most are medium to dark grey flint with lighter patches, one is more translucent medium grey-brown flint and one pale grey. They weigh 10.17 grams.

41 fragments of blades, bladelets and blade production waste probably of Late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). None of the pieces show clear evidence of being turned into microliths or further working into tools. A few have some places where notches have been started by retouch or short lengths of possible retouch but these are not completed or a clear tool created. Where there are snapped ends of larger blades the remainder may have been utilised. They weigh 36.6 grams in total; the heaviest is 3.12 grams, the lightest 0.12 grams. The flint is mostly dark to dark-medium grey with pale…

Six flint microliths, formed from parts of blades or bladelets with retouch and dating to the Mesolithic period (8300-3500 BC). Total weight: 2.80 grams.
Small triangular microlith made from a section of a blade in pale grey flint. Probably the broken tip of a larger piece it has a snap at one end and long, scalar retouch on the dorsal face along the other two sides, which meet in a sharp point. On the left the retouch is abrupt, on the right semi-abrupt. It is 9.7mm long, 4.9mm wide and 2.1mm thick, it weighs 0.10 grams.

Greensand chert microlith, formed from part of a blade or bladelet and dating to the Mesolithic period (8,300 to 3,500 BC). There is cortex covering c.10 of the surface at the distal end and the edges have short, scalar abrupt retouch down their entire lengths on the dorsal face apart from the proximal end of the right edge which appears unretouched. The proximal end and bulb of percussion have been removed. It is 21.5mm long, 7.3mm wide and 2.4mm thick and weighs 0.45 grams. It is pale brown-green chert.

Object type: TRANSVERSE ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Chisel shaped arrowhead with tranchet sharpened end. Arrowheads of this type were popular in both the Late Mesolithic and Late Neolithic but given the other material in the assemblage the former date appears most likely. Formed on a large flake with the bulb of percussion removed. The ventral face is plain apart from some chipping and some shallow long scalar retouch at the hafting end of the left edge. On the dorsal face the left and right edges both have long abrupt scalar retouch along their length becoming invasive at the hafting end. The blade end has been sharpened with a large …

Object type: TRANCHET FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Probably a poorly stuck 'tranchet' flake from the end of an axe of Late Mesolithic date. The small flake has been taken off across the end of a large heavily retouched tool. It is triangular in section with the retouched faces of the tool meeting in a curved end at almost 90 degrees. More of one side is present than of the other. Both sides show evidence of invasive scalar invasive semi-abrupt to shallow retouch. This flake would not have removed the entire end of the piece and although it would have created a sharp edge it is not a large or shallow as more tranchet flakes. It is 30.…

Incomplete piece of worked Portland chert, possibly a chisel arrowhead of late Mesolithic or possibly late Neolithic date. It is formed on a thin tertiary flake but the bulb of percussion has been removed on the ventral side by retouch, some arises from previous removals remain on the dorsal face. It is now trapezoid in plan with a snap across the short end, long scalar semi abrupt retouch down the sides on both faces and a few chips from the broad blade. One side (that closest to the previous position of the bulb) is much more heavily reworked than the other on the dorsal face. It is…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
45 flint flakes with small areas of retouch. Most are tertiary flakes with one primary and eight secondary flakes with 50-5% cortex. Most have small areas of retouch or use wear along no more than 10-15% of the edge but they are not shaped into formal tools. The flint varies from high quality black flint to more weathered pale grey mottled pieces. The cortex, where present, is generally thin and may suggest pebble flint. The largest piece is 42.3 by 35.0 by 8.3mm, the smallest, part of a snapped flake, 18.3mm by 12.6mm by 2.1mm. They weigh 176 grams in total.
