The axehead is plano-convex in form and struck from a low-grade, browny-orange flint with less-silicious patches and thick cortex (which makes it difficult to flake). The cutting edge is rather more diagonally-flaked than transversely-flaked. The axehead is roughly struck with large flake scars. The sides and butt-end are steeply flaked.

A fragment of a Mesolithic tranchet axehead or a slightly later Neolithic flaked axehead (not enough survives to be sure). It comprises the butt end (unless it is a narrow cutting end). Measures 35.05x34.92x22.51mm and weighs 23.9g. The axehead fragment is lentoid in cross-section and has large flake scars on both surfaces with some iron staining on the arises. The flint is 100% heavily patinated on all surfaces, including the break which indicates this occurred in ancient times.

Damage at the cutting edge and butt end show a light grey flint beneath. There is some iron staining on both faces. In section, at the butt-end, it is diamond-shaped. At the cutting end it is oval-sectioned. 7000-3000 BC.

The stone is speckled with a greenish-blue hue and several green blue fault lines running through it. It is probably Cornish or Welsh in origin. Measures 151x101x42 and weighs 945g (to nearest 5g). Similar to an example in Flint Implements (The British Museum 1968) from Marlborough in Wiltshire and dating to the Mesolithic (Plate X, no.7).
