Record ID: NLM-0EB422
Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
White and pale grey Flint debitage. Long flake with three elongated flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect along with a later chip, and a possible small bulb of percussion at one end on its ventral side, showing where it was subsequently removed from the core. Although shaped as if to make a piercing point, the object bears no retouch to confirm that this use was intended. Reworking would have given a more durable point; though now sharp at its ends, this object would not retain them if it were used as an awl. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 8000-4000 BC. Length: 49.4mm, Width…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint tranchet axehead. Sub-rectangular flake of ovate section with two broad parallel flakes struck from either side and with angled flakes trimmed from either side at one end to form a cutting edge. The other end is flat, forming a butt. Dense milky patina has developed over all struck surfaces, indicating the object has endured prolonged exposure after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic, 10,000-7000 BC. Length: 62.9mm, Width: 31.1mm, Thickness: 22.0mm, Weight: 39.56gms.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Brown flint or chert. Adze. Knapped flint or chert adze formed by hard hammer working. The object is of ovate section with particularly large flakes removed at its mid point to facilitate hafting. A carefully angled cutting edge has been pressure flaked to sharpen or maintain it. Patinated overall; the underlying colour of the stone is only revealed where small recent chips have intruded at the butt end and at two points on the edge. Suggested date: Later Mesolithic, 6,500-3500 BC. Length: 128mm, Width: 48mm, Thickness: 36mm, Weight: circa 230gms.

White flint debitage. Thin double-crested flake, as identified by the finder, bearing the scars from removal of three parallel long thin flakes. The working here suggests a Late Mesolithic date, 7000-4000 BC BC. Length: 40mm, Width: 8.7mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 0.85gms.

Brown flint with pale buff patina. Irregular lump, with several points and possible retouch. DS regards this as possible burin; MF unconvinced, believing the orange colour to represent natural river-rolling, and apparent working as damage attending this episode. Length: 50.53mm, Width: 33.02mm, Thickness: 15.41mm. David Smith's ref: Site 5.

White and brown iron-stained flint. Sub-triangular flint with ?retouch, finder considers this a possible burin or point. MF dissents: Iron stain may suggest this object to have been river-rolled, which could account for most damage observed. MF suggests. Length: 52.09mm, Width: 27.18mm, Thickness: 11.66mm.

White patinated Flint. Debitage. Elongated pointed flake with parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect, of slightly curving profile. The white patina extends over the broken end, suggesting this was broken in antiquity, and contrasts with the unpatinated state of some of the more numerous Neolithic flints reported from the vicinity. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 19.2mm, Width: 7.5mm, Thickness: 2.3mm, Weight: 0.30gms.

Toffee coloured semi-translucent Flint with cortex, serrated implement. Elongated plano-convex tapered flake of good quality non-local flint or chert with two elongated and one oblique flake removal scars on one side, producing an angular section. A strip of thick creamy cortex has been deliberately left in place along one face of the convex side, and the long sharp edge opposite it has been very finely denticulated by pressure flaking with a fine point, perhaps the end of an antler tine. Chips at either end of the object are probably adventitious damage, though it is uncertain at wha…

Pale grey flint serrated implement. Bladelet with four long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side, its end bevelled, and slightly curved on the ventral side. Short abrupt retouch, unusually executed from the ventral aspect, follows one straight edge to confer a finely serrated cutting edge; a lesser degree of apparent retouch on the opposite edge is probably fortuitous damage. The lack of patina may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.
