Flint possible scraper. Oval or cockle-shell-shaped chunk with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer working and with a concave spall on its ventral side. It is unclear which of the opposed flat edges might represent a striking platform; the finder’s kind suggestion this might be a core could admit the possibility that both were. Pale honey coloured, perhaps from exposure to a calcareous environment, and orange stained from its incorporation into gravel. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic, 10000-7000 BC.

Flint scraper. An oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by multangular hard hammer strike, a bulb at the base of the ventral side with an adjacent striking platform. Some further damage may be adventitious. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curving edge, and part of that edge is crushed or battered. The flint has an opaque pale honey tint which may arise from its long exposure to a calcareous environment, though the iron staining which might be expected on a river-rolled flint is very limited and might more usually identify an early pie…

Grey flint with cortex spot, scraper. A concavo-convex flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a markedly concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the thicker curved end, and traces of battering appear here. All struck surfaces bear a white patina, suggesting the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC

Flint scraper. Oval flake with a flat butt at its narrower end. Two broad flakes have been trimmed from the dorsal side and a low bulb appears next to the striking platform or butt at the narrower end of the ventral surface. Short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curving edge. A dense creamy patina overall suggests the object subsequently endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, and orange staining may suggest incorporation into gravel; this is the basis for the relatively early date proposed. Grey flint scraper. Thick flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a concave ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved end opposite the bulb; this surface has subsequently been battered. The lack of patina may suggest it was then incorporated into a sealed deposit. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Flint hollow scraper. Long narrow flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly concave rippled ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect defines a curved notch in the middle of one long edge, apt to the trimming of arrow shafts. A dense creamy patina suggests the object was subsequently exposed to a calcareous environment, a common feature of flint reported hereabouts, though apparently unrelated to the local geology; orange staining hints at its incorporation in gravels. Grey flint scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. A thick flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved end. Given the age of the object, a lack of surface patina may point to its inclusion in a sealed context until recently. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 70000-4000 BC.

Grey flint, appearing brown under transmitted light, scraper. A tiny chip with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of the ventral surface. Flint scraper. Oval flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral surface towards the butt. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge. A dense creamy patina with roughened areas suggests the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment. The finder kindly suggests the thickness and character of the coating may point to an earlier Mesolithic date. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic, 10,000-7000 BC

Pale grey flint scraper. A thin sub-triangular flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect forms a rounded notch in a pre-existing concave side. Misty patina suggests the object was exposed to a calcareous environment. Grey flint with cortex, scraper. A small thick chunk with parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, trimming some cortex, and with an originally bulbar ventral surface. The latter received further trimming removing narrow parallel flakes, followed by long angled retouch executed from the ventral aspect following a curving edge. The relict cortex may have been retained to facilitate use of the tool. Misty patina indicates the object was exposed to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Brown flint with cortex strip, possibly collected from the East Coast; scraper. A long flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trimmed cortex along one long edge, and contributed to the formation of a notch in the opposite long edge. The edges are battered by use. Grey flint scraper. A roughly L-shaped flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly hollowed ventral surface, both characteristic features of flint work of the later Mesolithic period. Misty white patina has developed over struck faces, suggesting the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina is interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, with limited subsequent adventitious chipping, probably to form a notched scraper. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Dark grey flint with cortex scraper. A thick flake with long narrow parallel flakes trimmed from its dorsal side by invasive angled retouch and with a bulb at one end of a markedly concave ventral surface. Either use of the side or adventitious chipping has interrupted a patchy misty patina over struck areas, which suggests the object has endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Grey-brown flint possible scraper. A small thick curved flake with angled scalar hard hammer retouch covering the dorsal side and with a concave ventral surface. The working face appears to have been a short straight edge at one end [top], defined by a single draft of the retouch. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000.

Black to dark grey-green flint with cortex strip, possible scraper. A thick flake with broad flakes struck from both sides and with a strip of cortex retained opposite the putative curved working edge. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge which is also battered. Long narrow parallel flake removal scars appear on one flat side, and it is these characteristic marks that commend an early date. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.
