Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A tertiary flint blade. The presence of a very slight bulb of percussion suggests soft hammer production. A conchoidal fracture can be seen on the dorsal face. Two other angles have also been struck from the strike platform forming a sub-triangular cross-section across the blade. The stike platform is unclear suggesting that it may have been chipped or damaged during deposition. Two parallel blades have been removed from this piece of flint, one half seems to have been removed in two sections, one above the other. There is no evidence of retouch. The blade is thin enough to be translu…

Object type: MATTOCK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete antler mattock of a style typical in Mesolithic artefacts. These hafted tools, although referred to as mattocks, can also be used as a pick-like or hammer tools. Similar examples have previously found in England including at the site of Star Carr. The example recorded here would have been a hammer variant. It is now incomplete and no haft remains. The remains of this artefact weights 133.64g. It has a length of 135.3mm, maximum width of 44.7mm and thickness of 67.2mm. The base of the antler is present but worn with only approximately one-quarter of the circumference h…

Record ID: CAM-ECADA8
Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably an axehead, or possibly an adze, of Mesolithic date. This prehistoric tool has been knapped (struck) out of flint. Most of the artefact survives though there is some damage particularly at the cutting edge which removed some of the diagnostic area that might have helped determine more conclusively between axehead and adze. In its current condition the object weighs 167.98g. It has maximum dimensions of: length of 141.9mm, width 38.4mm and thickness 28.7mm. Mostly a medium to dark deep toffee colour with lesser patches of beige, pale brown/dark cream colour.

A perforated worked stone artefact probably/possibly a mace of Early Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The artefact is a rounded pebble, oval in plan with a length of 49.11mm and width of 37.65mm. Through the, approximate, centre of the stone is a circular perforation that has been worked from both sides towards the centre. The perforation has differing diameters on either side and both sides of the perforation taper in towards the centre. The perforation on one side has a diameter of 19.43mm tapering to 7.90mm in the middle of the stone before flaring out to a diameter of 19.07mm on the …
