A possible tranchet axe. A small, irregularly flaked flint axe with an apparent failed tranchet sharpening at the cutting edge. Pale grey and beige flint with a heavy chalky off-white patina and iron staining. Both long edges are extensively flaked from both faces, creating a ridged lozengiform cross section. One long edge is straight, the other is slightly wavy. It has a narrow, tapered butt. The opposite end has some edge damage and the cutting edge may have been more flared. There is a small flake removal at one edge. but the flake did not travel far enough across to create a prope…

An axehead made on a partially naturally fractured flake of mid grey secondary flint. A crude tranchet style axehead. The surface has patinated to a very pale grey with areas of iron staining and a mid gloss. It has been crudely and steeply flaked to produce a tapering shape. The wider end has been modified with a single tranchet flake to form a crude cutting edge. There is some thin, abraded cortex on one face of the implement. The lateral margins have been pecked and abraded to blunt the edges of the piece. Date: Probably Mesolithic - c. 8300 to 3500 BC Dimensions: 94 mm x 42 mm
