On the dorsal face there are three narrow, parallel flake removal scars. The flake has a trapezoidal profile. There is a notch with probable fine retouch at the proximal end and it is possible this is a crude microburin. An incomplete flint axe. A large tranchet axe of the Mesolithic. The cutting edge and part of the body of the axe only remains, the butt having been broken off in antiquity. It is made from pale mid grey and grey brown flint with less siliceous patches and bands. It is patinated to a matt, pale grey colour with some iron staining. There are numerous flaking scars on all the surfaces, with several transverse flakes removed from one edge and resulting in an off-centre ridge along the length of the axe. The body of the axe has an irregular triangular cross section which, as the axe is sh…

There is a triangular striking platform, low bulb of percussion and waves of percussion on the ventral face.. There is some slight denticulation around the edges, but ist is not clear if this is deliberate of the result of damage. There are two flaking scars and a pronounced inter-scar ridge on the dorsal face. The flake is very small and is most likely to be from Mesolithic or early Neolithic bladelet manufacture (pers. comm. An axehead made on a partially naturally fractured flake of mid grey secondary flint. A crude tranchet style axehead. The surface has patinated to a very pale grey with areas of iron staining and a mid gloss. It has been crudely and steeply flaked to produce a tapering shape. The wider end has been modified with a single tranchet flake to form a crude cutting edge. There is some thin, abraded cortex on one face of the implement. The lateral margins have been pecked and abraded to blunt the edges of the piece. Date: Probably Mesolithic - c. 8300 to 3500 BC Dimensions: 94 mm x 42 mm

Flint axe. Probable tranchet axe of Late Mesolithic date. Long, oval flaked axe with an oval cross section. Off-white flint with a heavy patina and orange iron staining. This object was unearthed many years ago and has been curated by the owners, hence its yellow-brown "mantlepiece" patina. The butt of the axe is tapered almost to a point. The axe is extensively flaked along both edges. The flakes are broad. The cutting edge is formed by similar broad flaking. The diagnostic transverse flake of a tranchet axe has been obscured by subsequent flaking or re-working. However, the overall …
