Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large crudely worked flint pick. The pick is roughly rectangular in shape, tapering slightly at one end. There are several longitudinal flake removals, struck from opposing ends (this has resulted in a thickened area around the middle of the pick). At the narrow end a small amount of striking platform remains and the opposing, wider end has been removed by transverse flaking. The flint has a heavy white patina. This was found on a beach and shows some signs of abrasion. Date: Probably Late Mesolithic to Neolithic - 7000 - 2350 BC Dimensions: 138 mm x 58 mm x 52 mm Weight: 438 g

A flint core tool. A flaked axehead. Mid grey and off-white patchy flint retaining the base of the cortex on one face. The flint areas have a glossy patina and there is some iron staining, particularily on the area of cortex. The axe has a lozenge-shaped profile with a slight mid rib on both faces as a result of transverse soft hammer flaking along both faces of the long edges. The butt of the axe is also flaked. The cutting edge is damaged, but there is a possible transverse flake. Date: Possible Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic - c. 6500 BC - 2900 BC The remnant transverse fl…

A Portland chert sub-discoidal scraper. A hard hammer struck secondary flake of opaque Portland chert with an unusual deep red-brown semi-gloss patina. It has a wide striking platform at the proximal end. On the ventral face is a pronounced bulb of percussionand indistinct waves. The dorsal face has several multi-directional flaking scars. There is a projecting "beak" of off-white cortex on the left dorsal margin. Along the dorsal edge and right dorsal margin there is evidence for steep retouch, forming the flake into a scraper. THe retouch has created a somewhat irregular edge which…
