Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An assemblage of flint waste, dating to the Mesolithic and Early Neolithic periods:
14 flakes from the production of Late Mesolithic narrowblade microliths
7 miscellaneous Early Neolithic flakes.
This collection is interesting and shows that activity on the site spanned many years. Though the dominance of waste flakes and retouch forms over cores suggests that occupation at the site was transitory, rather than settled, the finder states that cores are present onsite.

An assemblage of 43 worked flints dating to the Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic.
17 waste flints
15 Late Mesolithic narrowblade microliths
4 Early Neolithic blades
7 miscellaneous worked flakes.
The assemblage is dominated by Mesolithic material, relating to microliths (small blades used to tip weapons for hunting red deer). However, the presence of a small quantity of Neolithic material is of note.

An assemblage of worked flints dating primarily to the Early Neolithic. Though cores were not identified by the FLO, the finder states that they are present on the site in some numbers.
One implement is crudely manufactured, and is heavily (c.100%) corticated. Unlike the rest of the collection (which is Neolithic), this item probably dates to the Mesolithic.
23 waste
11 retouch forms, including scrapers and rejuvenation flakes.

A large flint tool, patinated in varied shades of brown. The entire dorsal face has been heavily worked and the edges have been retouched. Very little cortex (0-10%) remains on either face. The ventral face has also been heavily worked and retouched. The length of the scraper is 37.3mm, the width is 29.2mm and the thickness is 7.5mm.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC

A tabular scraper with retouch only evident on the distal surface. The flint orange-brown in colour and retains cortex on the distal surface, although there is no patina. This is an unusual flint as there is a ?natural hole through the centre of the scraper which appears to pre-date the retouching – this hole has re-cortified, and with the tabular retouching the artefact at first looks like a spindle whorl. It is unknown whether the presence of the hole was ever utilised for hanging or securing the scraper by rope or string. The scraper is 35.53mm in diameter and 10.58mm thick and we…

Mesolithic bladelet, 33mm long, 11mm wide and 3mm thick. The flint is in good condition with a dark brown patina. The flake has a small patch of re-cortication near the bulb. It has a clean sub-rectangular form and a clear median ridge.

A large snub-nosed borer made from a flint with a dark grey core and dark brownish orange outer. No cortex remains. The bulb has been removed, while retouch is evident around all edges. There are also removals on the 'nose' end of the borer tip. This tool may have been hafted into a wooden or bone handle and used either by hand or with a bow-drill.
This object is hard to date, but is probably Mesolithic to Neolithic in date. The tool measures 38.47mm long and weighs 9.2gms. The width of the tool is 25.53mm at the shoulders, reduced to 9.51mm at the bore tip.

An opaque grey flint with signs of working. Possibly a scraper, although there is no evidence of retouching or refining around the edges. There is some post-depositional flaking. The reverse is smooth, with faint signs of a bulb of percussion and subsequent ripples. The opposite face has 5 platforms. Sub-oval in plan, and eliptical in section.

A dark grey-brown flint with evidence of working. Ripples are clearly evident across the otherwise flat reverse. Some cortex is still present on the opposite surface. Some retouching is evident on the left side of the tool, suggesting it has been used as a scraper. Roughly leaf-shaped in plan. Mesolithic in date.

A complete flint Scraper of Mesolithic date (9,000-3,450 BC). The object is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains four predominant negative scars. The proximal and distal ends have been blunted. The left and right hand edges have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The distal right hand edge contains a semi-circular notch. The ventral surface is slightly concave with shallow ripples of percussion emanating from small bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end. There is a single shallow negative scar on the bulb of percussion. The lithic retain n…
