Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Mesolithic Tranchet Axehead dating to the Mesolithic period (9,000-3,450 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan, long and narrow with a tapering butt end. The lithic is bi-convex in section creating a sub-rhomboid cross section due an off-centre ridge running down the centre dorsal and ventral surfaces. Coarse flaking covers both surfaces of the axehead. The blade has been formed by the removal of a final flake transversely across the dorsal face known as a tranchet flake. The flint is now covered with a broadly cream (ecru) patination with pockets of orange staining on…

An incomplete flint Axe of Mesolithic date (9,500-3,550 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan, long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. The lithic is bi-convex in section creating a sub-rhomboid cross section due an off-centre ridge running down the centre dorsal surface. The dorsal surface has covering scaled flaking and a minor amount of retained cortex at the proximal left hand end. The left and right hand edges have semi-abrupt. The object has a transverse break approximately half way along the original length of the axehead. The blade edge is missing due to an abrup…

A Mesolithic flint axehead, c.8300-4500BC. The axehead is unusually short, with a curved cutting edge and a rounded butt. There is a large tranchet flake removal scar at the butt end of the axe. A small area of cortex remains in a recess possibly caused by a fossil. One side has a longitudinal ridge running from behind the cutting edge to the tip of tranchet flake. The other side has a rounded surface.

A complete flint Axehead or Pick of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (9000-1500 BC). The object is Sub-rectangular in plan and bi-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains three predominant negative scars and short scaled flaking to the left hand edge and is more steeply convex than the ventral surface. The proximal edge is abruptly blunted and all other edges have rough semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface has short scaled flaking to the distal, left and right hand edges. The flint is light grey in colour with dark grey and cream inclusions throughout. The object is possib…

An incomplete flint Axehead of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (9000-1500 BC). The object is Sub-rectangular in plan and bi-convex in section. The object terminated in a transverse abrupt break resulting in the loss of the hafted end of the object. The dorsal surface is more steeply convex than the ventral surface and both have covering stepped flaking. The distal, left and right hand edges have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The fracture has a bulb of percussion emanating from the dorsal surface The flint is a mottled light grey in colour externally and a dark grey internally, this diff…

A complete flint Tranchet Axe of Mesolithic date (9,500-3,550 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan, long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. The lithic is bi-convex in section creating a sub-triangular cross section due an off-centre ridge running down the centre dorsal surface. The dorsal surface has covering scaled and parallel flaking and a minor amount of retained cortex at the proximal end. All edges have semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface has covering scaled flaking and a large triangular transverse 'tranchet' flake has been removed from distal edge. The lith…
