Cast cu-alloy thimble dating from the middle or later medieval period 1200 to 1500AD. The thimble is complete and quite narrow compared to the tall silver or tin thimbles of the early modern period. The thimble is slightly squashed with fracture lines around the base. The dots on the outside were hand-drilled by a medieval thimbler who arranged them in a spiral starting at the top of the thimble and then working down to the opening. A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…
