Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy quatrefoil horse harness pendant decorated with a scallop shell filled with the remains of red enamel. The scallop shell is a symbol of St. James and pilgrimage generally. The pendant is missing its attachment loop, but the edge of one arc of the quatrefoil is damaged, and it may have been attached at this point. Griffiths in Clark (2004) illustrates a similar enamelled example on page 66, Fig.49, No.66, which is dated to the 14th century. Read (2001) illustrates a similar enamelled example on page 56, Fig.35, No.445, which is dated to the 14th century.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Single sheet copper alloy tongue-shaped strap-end, folded lengthways and tapering to a fleur de lis knop at its terminal. The folded side of the strap-end has split open from the middle to the upper attachment edge. There is one rivet hole just below the attachment edge with the rivet still extant, attaching the two ends of the strap-end together. The surfaces of the strap-end are quite scratched, but one face appears to have some crude decoration of diagonal lines with some cross-hatching towards the terminal end. Egan (2002) illustrates similar examples on page 131, Nos.605 & 606, w…

Cast copper-alloy purse bar with an oval suspension loop, acorn-shaped neck terminal, and a central square-shaped block. The surface is corroded and more recently gashed so that no decoration can be seen. The central block is drilled and fitted with a swivelling oval loop which is lozenge-shaped in cross-section. There is a moulded, stylised, zoomorphic head to either side of the central block, gripping the side arms, which are circular in cross-section, in its mouth. The side arms are stepped or taper after a further 18 mm from the edge of these mouths to their present terminals. The…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead weight, rectangular in plan and profile, and flat in section. It has been incised at one end with the letters 'M' and 'N' which might refer to someone's initials. The top face has also been incised with a single horizontal line down the middle of the weight. Small flat lead rectangular or square weights are often termed 'Apothecary weights' which were used from the 15th to the 17th centuries, once the mass of the English penny declined steeply and the current penny could no longer be used as a substitute for a weight, especially for sensitive purposes such as making medic…

Incomplete cast enamelled heraldic shield-shaped harness pendant with some of the blue enamel surviving so that the image of a lion rampant facing left is just visible. Both faces of the pendant are corroded so that much of the surfaces are missing, and part of the suspension loop is also missing. Read (2001) illustrates a similar example on page 53, Fig.32, No.411, which is dated to the 14th century.

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy coin weight depicting a ship on the obverse with a fleur de lis to the left of the mast and a lion passant to the right. The weight is uniface with the reverse blank, although some marks can be seen, possibly as a result of the flans being adjusted to weight by filing, or the weight having been struck on an anvil, or another flat surface which may have been patterned. The surface is too corroded to be sure. These coin weights were produced in Britain from the 15th to the 16th centuries to check the weight of the gold noble. Withers (1995) illustrates several examples…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast lead papal bulla of Pope Clement VI (1342-1352), with the name in relief CLE/MENS/PP VI on the reverse, a floret above and below. The small floret at the start of the text, and the reversed bar to the 'N' are characteristic of bullae of Clement VI. The obverse is very worn and only a few pellets remain that would have formed part of the border and surrounded the heads of St. Peter and St. Paul, to the left and right of a cross in the centre. Bullae of Clement VI are relatively frequent and mark an upsurge in the use of papal documents about the time of the Black Death. …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring, stirrup-shaped in profile, with a rectangular bezel with five sub-circular cells or settings for stones within it, consisting of four smaller settings around one larger central setting. What remains in the base of these settings is lead oxide which was used to hold the stones, now missing, in place. "The dividers between the individual stones look asymmetrical to the extent that they would seem to be catering for slightly irregular shaped natural gems in the Medieval tradition, rather than the precisely regularised, facetted gems of the Post…
