Incomplete cover plate of the box mounted at the apex of a Post-medieval copper alloy stirrup in the form of a scallop shell or crown. The edges at the side are missing, having been broken off with the bar which would have formed the rear of the box. The moulded plate is formed of six incised radiating oblique lines, above a transvere border. In the centre of the convex upper edge, there is a rectangular knop, 8 mm wide and protruding 6 mm from the edge. This makes the plate look like a crown with a mounted element on top. If meant to depict a scallop shell, then it may indicate links…

Copper alloy belt plate that would have been attached to a single looped buckle. The plate was cut from a sheet of copper alloy. In plan it has a circular terminal, a triangular projection mid-way along on each side, followed a wider D-shaped section close to the opposite end that would have attached to the buckle. The bar of the 'D' is terminated by a small projection at each end. Beyond this the end of the plate is narrower and has been folded backwards and then fastened to the D-shaped section using two rivets. The strap-bar of the buckle was held by the folded end of the plate, th…

There is a plain raised border around the base that is 2.3 mm in depth, and above this the thimble is covered with drilled irregular circular pits, spaced at five per cm in circumferential rings. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy thimble, circular in plan and slightly conical in profile, with drilled circular pits, spaced at around six per cm in parallel concentric circles which become more random on the crown. There is no border around the base. The thimble is complete but worn and with slight damage around the edge of the base. The thimble is of a heavy-duty type with the metal fairly thick, around 1.5mm at the base, thickening towards the dome. Egan (2010) illustrates a similar thimble on p.267, fig.206, no.831 dating from c.1400-1450. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on p.7…

Cast copper alloy enamelled stud in the form of a shield with an integral cylindrical shank that is circular in section, 3 mm in diameter, projecting 8 mm from the back. On the front of the shield there are three irregularly shaped patches of dark blue enamel that remain along the top edge of the shield and a fourth at the point. Very slight traces of enamel remain in the central part of the shield and these also appear to be dark blue. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swindon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Silver annular brooch with pin intact that dates from the Post-medieval period. The frame has been bent inwards since deposition and would have originally been more circular in plan. The brooch was formed from a circular disc with the centre cut out and then the 'washer' was placed in a doming block and then formed with a punch to create the convex shape of the frame so that it is C-shaped in section (Martin Page pers comm). The upper inner edge of the frame is bevelled inwards creating a border which is 1 mm thick. The frame is recessed from both edges to create the pin hinge and the…

Silver mount, possibly a hat badge or made to decorate a leather strap, dating from the Medieval period. It represents the half-length figure of a bearded male, probably a saint, issuing from a scalloped border. The figure has a shoulder strap that crosses his torso diagonally, and he holds a staff in his left hand with a curved crook at the top, with a fold of his cloak draped over his left arm. A projecting ridge along the brow of the head suggests that he is wearing a cap, suggesting that the figure may represent St James the Great, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the first …
