Record ID: SF-938F1C
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead weight of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The object is a crude, flattened, sub-square shape with a simple raised cross on one face dividing it into four sections. The surface is heavily corroded and there is damage in places.
Weights like these were made locally on small scale from the Roman period onwards and as such are difficult to date precisely when not found in a secure, dated archaeological context. The form and decoration on this example suggests a medieval to post-medieval date.

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy medieval London Type VI rotary key. The bow and part of the bit are missing. The stem is circular in cross-section and its broken outer end hollow. There is a collar around the inner end of the bow and beyond this a short arm projects at an angle to one side - all that remains of an openwork bow. At the outer end has a simple ward projected from one side, which is probably part of what was a larger bit originally, but this outer end is now missing. The surface of the metal is hevaily corroded.

A fragment of a copper-alloy medieval buckle frame. Only the outer part survives. This is narrowed and recessed with a prominant knop to either end suggesting that it probably accommodated a separate sheet metal roller originally. As such it is most likely to belong to Meols Type 12, which dates to the late 13th to early 14th century (Griffiths et al. 2007, fig.2.5.1).

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy medieval buckle frame. Only the outer edge of the frame survives. This is expanded and unusually ornately decorated. Both faces are divided into found rounded knops separated by two transverse ridges in the centre and one transverse ridge between the outer knops. One face is further decorated with a cross-hatched engraved motif covering the surface of each knop.
This is an example of a Meols Type 8 buckle, which dates to the late 13th to 14th century AD (Griffiths et al. 2007, fig.2.5.1).
