A complete copper-alloy medieval multi-component strap fitting. The object consists of three separate sections. One of the two outer sections is a bar mount with loop featuring square plate with an arm projecting from the centre of its inner edge that curves round towards its reverse, culminating in a smaller lozenge-shaped plate. An integral rivet projects from the centre of the reverse of the square plate passing through a hole in the centre of the lozenge-shaped plate and connecting them together. The other outer section consists of a long str…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Medieval pendant loop dating to the later 14th century. It comprises an incomplete bar mount and quatrefoil loop. One of the lobes is squared with a recessed bar across its outer end where it is attached to an in situ simple copper-alloy strap mount. Thias is formed of sheet metal and is wrapped around the bar with a rivet hole at either end.  See Egan and Pritchard (1991, 221, fig.138, no.1189) for comparison. These are of later 14th century date (ibid., 26, fig.13).

A complete copper-alloy medieval strap loop, dating c.1270-1400. It has an in situ copper-alloy rivet with an oval terminal. It is rectangular/slighty trapezoidal with a slightly longer outside edge, similar to an example from excavation in London illustrated by Egan and Prichard (1991, 232, fig.1249).  PAS database similairites with MS-0A703E and SUR-7E729E.

A complete copper-alloy medieval or post-medieval strap fitting. It consists of a bar mount made from a long strip of copper-alloy, slightly wider at either end, folded in two and secured with two rivets. The rivets may be iron as the reverse is covered with iron corrosion. A simple copper-alloy hoop, oval in cross-section with wear in multiple places, sits within the fold at the lower end. Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate similar, finer examples from excavations in London all found in late 14th century contexts, but simple examples like this one may be later.  Len…

A complete copper-alloy medieval one piece strap fitting. The object is broadly U-shaped with a curved loop-like base and an elongated rectangular loop at end and an inward-facing projection with a hooked end at the other. The hooked end of the latter projection is crudely shaped like an animal's head and behind this the outer face is decorated with three diagonal grooves, all filled with what appears to be niello, bordered by a transverse groove at either end. Below this the outer part of the lower loop-like lower section is decorated with a raised sh…

A complete copper-alloy medieval strap fitting or strap end component. It is formed from a rectangular piece of sheet metal with two small circular holes through the corners of one end. A complete copper-alloy medieval strap fitting. It is circular in shape with a cruciform aperture through the centre. On one face there is a recess at the end of each arm of the aperture, presumably where separate components would have been attached originally. A small number of similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database inclduing: LEIC-933F6C, NCL-CCD0F4. The latter example still had another component attached to one side confirming that these were the central sections of multiple-component strap fittings. Two fragments of an incomplete copper alloy medieval swivelling strap fitting. Both fragments are parts of the 'female' component of the swivel fitting. One fragment contains an oval shaped hole, which would be the terminal for the 'male' component of the swivel fitting. It measures 10.87mm in length, 6.17mm in width and 2.91mm in thickness. Weight 0.54g. The other fragment is curved into a semicircular shape and is part of what would have been the frame for the 'female' component.
