An incomplete copper-alloy medieval strap end. The object is roughly trapezoidal in shape, each face becoming narrower towards the lower end before flaring outwards very slightly and with sub-triangular sides that also becoming narrower towards the lower end. The upper, widest end is open, forming a socket where the strap would have been accommodated originally. A circular attachment hole can be seen to either upper corner of the outer face, both covered with iron corrosion. Traces of what might be a black-letter inscription can be seen in the centre of the outer face - a design c…

An incomplete copper-alloy with white metal coating late medieval composite crecentic strap end. It is formed from two plates riveted together, the outer one is crescent-shaped with an elaborate knop projecting from its lower end and the rear plate is a smaller D-shaped, but incomplete, covering the reverse of the crescent-shaped section only. The outer face of the crescent-shaped section is decorated with the letters IHS in black letter script with foliate designs to either side. The knop projecting from its lower end is a downwards pointing lozenge-shaped, its outer fa…

An incomplete gilded copper-alloy strap end (single sheet folded widthways). At the outer end an in situ copper-alloy rivet attaches the plates together. The outer end of the reverse of the plate is missing. Trace of gilding can be seen in places on the surface. For a similar example see fig.12 in Egan and Pritchard (1991, p.24), who date this style from c.1275 - c.1450.

A complete copper-alloy medieval strap end with white metal coating. It is formed from two plates, each trapezoidal in shape and tapering gently towards the lower end. The outer face of the outer plate is decorated with two, parallel, engraved lines forming a border, between which there are widely space transverse lines creating a ladder-like pattern. There is a single, small circular hole through both plates at the upper end, which is surrounded by traces of iron corrosion. Traces of white metal coating can be seen in places on the surface.  This belongs to a group of …

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy strap end, dating c.AD 1270-144. It is two-part with no central spacer and sub-rectangular in shape with a long decorative knop projecting from the lower end. The terminal end is corroded, but is elongated with a slight knop projecting to either side of its centre and a rounded, misshapen knop at its lower end. There are two surviving copper-alloy rivets - one in the centre of the terminal knop and one at the lower end of the attachment section. It has a green patina.  Egan and Pritchard (1991, 24, fig.12) date strap ends of this…

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy strap end, dating c. AD 1270-1450. It is formed of two trapezoidal sheets of copper-alloy with remains of a sheet spacer. It is slightly wider at the attachment end. There are two surviving copper-alloy rivets and remaining leather can be seen between the sheets. It has a green patina. Similar strap ends from excavations in London can be seen in Egan and Pritchard 1991.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval strap end. The majority of the object consists of the central spacer of a strap end with only small sections of the external plates surviving at the terminal end. The surviving section is sub-rectangular in shape with a long, elaborate cross fleury knop projecting from the lower end. Above the knop each side of the object has two semi-circular indentations, one above the other, creating a slight pointed projection between them. The surviving spacer would probably have extended partway along the original length of the strap end with lon…

A complete Medieval copper-alloy integral forked spacer from a strap end. It consists of an annular section with long bifurcated arms projecting to one side. A single worn acorn shaped knop projects from the lower edge of the annular section.  Egan and Pritchard (1991, 24, fig.12) suggest a c.AD 1270-1450 date range for this form of strap end. Shares similarities on the PAS database with PUBLIC-2B1129 and NARC-6B3529.

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval forked spacer from a strap end. The spacer is U-shaped with a curved inner edge and angular outer edge. One end is longer than the other due to damage. Projecting from the centre of the lower edge is a long acorn-shaped knop with a collar around its base. Originally it would have sat between two plates, providing a gap for the strap to sit in. It survives in fair condition with a little corrosion. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 24, fig.12) suggest a c.AD 1270-1450 date range for this form of strap end. Each plate is trapezoidal in shape, becoming narrower towards their lower end. The upper end has two v-shaped notches cut into it and a small knop projects from the centre of the lower edge.
