A complete copper-alloy medieval seal matrix. The outer face (die) is decorated with the central engraved design of a male and female head facing each other kissing and an outer engraved inscription, which is now too worn and damaged to be ready clearly. The surface of the metal is corroded and the breaks are well worn. Matrices featuring a similar design of a kissing couple are recorded on the PAS database from Somerset (SOM-4…

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval annular buckle/brooch. The hoop is circular in both shape and cross-section, its outer face decorated with fine transverse ribs. A simple copper-alloy pin with moulded annular head remains in situ.  Without a recess for the pin this is best defined as a buckle, although its delicate, decorative form shows some similarities to medieval annular brooches. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 64) suggest that the annular buckle form was in use from the late 14th century into the Post-Medieval period and they are difficult to date more closely. Diameter:…

A complete copper-alloy medieval annular shoe buckle. It consists of a small circular frame with a simple copper-alloy wire pin wrapped around it to one side. Similar buckles have been found during excavations in London, most from mid-14th to mid-15th century contexts (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 5758), although their chronology extends beyond this into the post-medieval period. Egan and Pritchard (ibid., 57) suggest that buckles of this period with a diameter or 20mm or less are probably from shoes, although some may have fulfilled other dress-related functions and there may have been s…
