TREASURE CASE 2019 T402. Description: A complete silver pendant dating to the medieval period AD 1200 - 1300. The pendant is circular in plan with a silver suspension loop set perpendicular to the main body. The front of the pendant retains a polished dark smoky grey - black stone, plano-convex in shape and held in place by a wavy edging of silver, set slightly within the flat, circular base of the pendant. An incomplete cast copper alloy swivel strap fitting dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1100-1500. This object survives as one of two linked rings. The remaining loop is roughly oval in plan with a widening base with zoomorphic mouldings in the form of open-mouthed beasts either side of the open, female element of the fitting. The opposing swivel ring with the male element is missing. An incomplete cast copper alloy medieval seal matrix of 14th century date. The matrix is of pedestal form with an oval face and central faceted handle on the reverse that tapers upwards toward the terminal, which is now missing. The face of the matrix bears the design of two interlocking rectangles with inwardly curved sides. A small cast copper alloy book clasp strap fitting of medieval date. The fitting has a rectangular plate with rounded shoulders leading into a zoomorphic head and snout set perpendicular to the plate. The mouth of the animal has the remains of a loop as is seen on larger examples. The reverse of the plate is slightly recessed and there is a single rivet for attaching the strap. A complete copper alloy strap fitting of medieval date. The strap fitting consists of a rectangular plate folded over by a half length on the reverse to form a void for the insertion of a strap. A large integral shank projecting from the rear of the front plate, above the tongue of the back plate, would have secure the strap in place. There are no rivets in the back plate. A complete medieval to early post-medieval copper alloy closed thimble, dating from c. AD 1400 - 1550. The thimble is beehive shaped with a domed, 'tonsure' top (Holmes 1988; 3) and flaring sides. There is a small notch on the lower edge, probably from construction. The circular pits are hand-drilled and arranged in vertical lines (becoming more angled and even diagonal in places) around the walls. Around the domed end of the thimble the drilled pits are in an apparent spiral; the very centre is undecorated (the 'tonsure') with a single pit in the very peak. See Holmes Sewing Thimbles…
