Record ID: SF-07586B
Object type: QUERN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete upper half from a grey volcanic lava stone quern of probable Medieval date. A fragment from one edge of the quern survives, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The non-grinding surface has medium sized and crude pecking, the grinding surface worn completely smooth either as a result of usage or later re-use. All surfaces demonstrate evidence for re-use at a later date for something other than a quern, perhaps resulting in the old breaks. It measures 166mm in surviving width, 152mm in surviving length, 51.31mm in thickness and 1.86kg (1860g) in weight. This qu…

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete upper half from a grey volcanic lava stone quern of probable Medieval date. Less than one quarter of the half survives, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The non-grinding surface has medium sized and crude pecking, with a large circular hole to one side that measures 27.27mm in internal diameter and would have enabled the attachment of a stick or similar to turn/rotate the quern. The grinding surface itself is completely smooth perhaps as a result of usage but also plausibly from later re-use, which is perhaps evident in damage to both sides of the fragment. I…

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete upper half from a volcanic lava stone quern of Post-Medieval date. It is circular in form with a central circular aperture that is conical in profile due to use-wear. The grinding surface has incised radial grooves and has extensive, uneven wear. The edges have the remains of worn vertical grooves that in places are now almost worn smooth. The non-grinding surface is roughly pecked and has three deep and smooth circular drilled holes to enable the insertion of a stick for turning the quern. These are positioned at three of the cardinal points, the fourth cardinal point not …

Object type: MORTAR (VESSEL)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone mortar of Medieval date. Less than one third of the mortar survives intact but in two joining fragments, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. It is formed from a pale yellow/white limestone that contains extensive shelly inclusions and is relatively coarse and brittle to the touch. The surviving fragment is formed from part of the base (diameter uncertain) of circular plan with dish/bowl-shaped interior. This has one section of wall leading to a flattened rim with slightly curving sides and gently curving interior that shows signs of use-wear.…

Object type: MORTAR (VESSEL)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone mortar of Medieval date. Approximately one third of the mortar survives intact, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. It is formed from a pale yellow/white limestone that is perhaps continental in origin and would originally have been circular in plan and bowl-shaped with a concave interior. The surviving section of the base suggests a base diameter of approximately 130mm. The sides are vertical and on their exterior surfaces have multiple vertical striations leading to a flattened rim. The interior has a slight curve towards the flattened base, which is wor…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a lava stone quern of probable Medieval date. It is approximately triangular in form with a grinding face that has multiple parallel grooves, the back face now mostly missing due to old breaks. It measures 89.85mm in length, 79.42mm in width, 58.69mm in thickness, and weighs 478g. This quern is made from volcanic larva stone, probably originating from the Rhine valley in Germany.
