A possible spindle whorl made of fine grained Jurassic blue or white lias limestone, (identified by Jon Radley, Keeper of Geology, Warwickshire Museum). Only half of the object remains. It is plano-convex, weighing 37g, measuring 50.14mm diameter and is 20.4m thick. In the centre there is an 11mm diameter hole. This may be a spindle whorl, but appears to be exceptionally heavy when compared to stone spindle whorls from London (Egan G. 1998 The Medieval Household Daily Living c. 1150-c.1450 Museum of London, London, The Stationary Office, Nos. 790-802), but it appears to be not heav…

A probable spindle whorl made of a middle Jurassic rusty sandstone, (identified by Jon Radley, Keeper of Geology, Warwickshire Museum). It is discoid, weighing 43.41g, measuring 47.39mm diameter and is 15.56m thick. In the centre there is a 8.99mm diameter hole. There are no signs of wear around the edges of the hole. The dates of spindle whorls are not certain, but were used throughout the Roman and Medieval periods (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide Unpublished). The object is a whetstone or hone. Ward-Perkins (Ward-Perkins J.B. 1940 Medieval Catalogue, Museum of London.) comments whetstones or hones are not usually found on Prehistoric or Roman sites in Britain, therefore suggesting the objects date from the later Early Medieval period onwards. The hole on the recorded example appears to have been hand-made, and therefore is not likely to be of recent date. The whetstone or hone is made from a fine grained stone, possibly a micaceous schist. It is rectangular in plan with both narrow edges being broken. It varies in thickness, to a maxim…

The fabric the possible mould is made from is a muddy limestone (Jon Radley, Warwickshire Museum). In plan the object is rectangular. The reverse face appears to be a broken surface. The other face has a low relief bird engraved in the centre, with its feet positioned in the centre of a long edge. The bird is illustrated from a side view. The bird is decorated by a series of low-relief conical shapes. On the 'basal' edge where the birds feet are, this surface is also engraved with a low relief rectangular platform which is also decorated with low-relief conical shapes. On …

The item appear to have been originally rectangular, however it is now incomplete. The surface of the block is tending to 'flake' in certain areas. The upper surface has a low-relief shape. The shape is similar to an oak-leaf with a short stem at the base and a trefoil shape in the centre. The maximum width of the low-relief shape is 28.14mm. The upper portion has been broken. On the two remaining corners there is a circular indentation.
