A flat circular copper-alloy seal matrix. The reverse has a raised central spine with a suspension loop at the top. The central motif is a rampant winged lion, standing on one foot (rear left on the impression). The other hind leg is raised and bent, and the forelegs are held straight out in front of the animal. The tail iscurved down, up and then down again to end in a tuft. The neck has a jagged line on the back indicating a mane, and the mouth is open. There appears to be a wing behind the shoulders, above the tail.
The matrix was full of soil when photographed, but the image can be inverted (switched to negative) to allow the inscription. to be at least partly read. Its is set between beaded lines and the first part is extremely hard to read, up until the L.The initial mark cannot be made out.
A possible reading is HIRIALOND: IS: CAKEBRED with the H, first R and first A all perhaps alternatively Ns. This is not easy to understand; although Cakebread is well known as a metonymic surname for a seller or maker of bread buns (Reaney and Wilson), the 'IS' does not seem to make much sense (particularly as it is clearly separate from the first word) and the first name (if that is what it is) is unidentified.
If this is a named seal matrix it is likely to be 13th century, but if anonymous it is more likely to be 14th century.
