Description:A late medieval (15th century) gold posy finger ring with an inscription which reads, in black letter:
x cest mon desir (this is my wish).
The ring is slightly distorted, but complete. The three words are spaced equally around the band and sit within lentoid expansions of two narrow ribs which encircle the ring. Between the words the spaces between the ribs and the rim of the ring are infilled with a diagonal grid. The words themselves may originally have been displayed within fields of enamel, perhaps red. Traces of enamel appear to survive against the keyed bac…

A medieval silver-gilt annular brooch. The brooch has a projection in the form of a pair of praying hands. The frame has a low triangular section. The frame has a recessed bar for the missing pin, and two flat platforms each with a raised saltire.
This is a well known form of medieval brooch. They occur in gold (usually with inscriptions), silver-gilt and, of lesser quality with cruder detail, in copper alloy. The decorated platforms on this example can be paralleled by CAM-1F5971.

A fragment of a late medieval silver-gilt finger ring.
Malcom Jones kindly suggests the following reading of the inscription:
~~
[a fragmentary letter far left, which I represent by - , followed by] -alenus/aienus + cet
The top righthand corner photo convinces me the first letter after the + is a c
I'm guessing we're in Anglo-French and that cet is a whole word = 'this' (as in modern Fr before masc nouns beginning with a vowel -- if that was also the case in MF -- anel 'ring', suggests itself!) But I note that cet can also stand for (modern) c'est, '…

A hoard of four cut quarters and eleven cut halfpennies of Henry III, c.1247-1279, all from the Long Cross Coinage, issued between 1247 and 1279 (into the reign of Edward I). A medieval silver-gilt crucifix pendant. The pendant is largely complete save for the left terminal of the cross and the lower part of the Christ figure. The figure appears to have been separately attached to the cross, perhaps with solder, although there is no visible trace of this. The arms of the cross are wide and each terminate in a trefoil, each of which is wider than the arms of the cross; the trefoils are decorated with radiating grooves on both sides of the cross. The face of the cross is extensively covered with parallel pairs of lines of punched triangles which run horizont…

A diminutive silver-gilt brooch in the form of intertwining serpents. The pin is missing. At least three heads appear to be visible, while one head and a probable tail appear to be incomplete. The thicker body of a larger snake is clear and this clearly has a head at either end. A more slender snake, which has a clear head and a broken tail, is tightly coiled around the body of the larger snake. Where the body of the larger snake is clear of the smaller snake it is decorated with closely spaced punched circles, and this decoration extends to the body where it is visible behind the he…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Medieval silver seal matrix or pendant with a looped extension on the apex in the form of an animal head, with a mane and pellet eyes. The head has open jaws which hold an unclear object. Reversed, on the bevelled frame of the pendant, is the inscription+ VT MIHI CREDEMEO which may be translated as Believe This From Me (John Cherry, pers. comm). The matrix has a central recess measuring 9.71 x 8.06mm and 2.04mm deep which may have held a Roman intaglio.
Despite the inscription being on a bevelled edge it seems best to regard this object as a seal matrix.

An incomplete cast silver-gilt object in the form of a lion facing right. The gilding has largely worn away but remains intact on the rear quarters of the lion. The lion is seated and looks backwards over its raised back with its jaws open. The eye and ear of the lion are clear and a group of ridges and grooves runs vertically behind the head to form a mane which ends on the front legs. The legs are tucked beneath the body and are treated in a stylised form using multiple ridges. Below the lion, between two vertical bands is an openwork element with two apertures above. This element ap…
