Record ID: LIN-E93740
Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval lead spindle whorl or weight. The weight is flat, circular, and has a central hole measuring 11mm in diameter. The front of the weight bears the letters IhC (the first three letters of the name Jesus in Greek). The hole is placed so that it removes a large portion of the centre of the inscription. This might suggests that it is a reused item; however, the reverse appears to have once had a moulded inscription running around the central hole. While the letters are largely illegible, two reversed 'N's are visible. The item weighs 40.29g, has a diameter of 36mm, and thickness of 8mm.

A decoratively incised collar runs across the plate just before it divides into two arms. Both arms wrap around a pin bar. The bar is probably incomplete at either end, though if it isn't then the object is possibly a clasp rather than a buckle.
