A medieval silver coin: a penny of Richard II (AD 1377 - 99), York mint, probably Type Ia but not corresponding exactly to any of the groups in North, nor any of the coins in Purvey (1962). Purvey mentions a quatrefoil after ACI on one reverse die of Type IA 3, but this does not appear to be listed in conjunction with a saltire before CIVI. The coin is 16.9mm diameter, 0.6mm thick and 0.87g. Compare North (1991) Volume 2, number 1329 - 1330 on page 63. Carl Savage (PAS Volunteer) agrees that the lettering is consistent with Type 1. It is 17.7mm in diameter and 0.5mm thick. It weighs 0.9gm. There is a chip in the edge of the coin. Compare North (1991) Volume 2, number 1330 on page 63. Obverse: RICARD x RE[X] x ANG[-](Z) FRAN Forward facing crowned bust with cross on breast, nothing by shoulders. Double saltire stops Reverse: x CIVI TAS EBO RACI Long cross with three pellets in each angle (and quatrefoil at centre).

A gold-plated counterfeit, imitation or replica hammered coin copying a quarter noble of Richard II (AD 1377 - 1399). Compare North (1991) Volume II, number 1318 on page 62, variant 4. The coin is incomplete. The obverse shows a shield of England in an 8-arched tressure. The obverse legend reads RIC[ARD D GR]A REX ANGL with double saltires separating each word. The reverse depicts a Lis at the centre of a floriated cross with a lis at the end of each arm and a lion passant guardant in each angle, all within a tressure of eight arches.
