Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy 'beehive' thimble constructed from sheet metal, probably dating from 1400-1500 AD. It is squashed and there is damage to the rim but was originally dome shaped, with no division between crown and sides. Unusually, this thimble either has a double layered wall, or is in fact two thimbles which were stacked one inside the other when deposited. Two closely fitting layers of copper alloy are visible at the rim, most noticeable where inner component has been squashed resulting in folds in the metal. The pits covering the walls and top are small, round and evenly spaced. Ther…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swindon

A corroded but complete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic horse-harness pendant of medieval date. The form of the artefact is possibly that of a stag's head. The suspension loop has been slightly bent at an angle on one side and there is evidence of iron corrosion within the loop. Characteristically it is set at ninety degrees to the body of the pendant, and is set forwards of the body. The upper surface is decorated with a depiction of a facing animal's head. The pellet eyes and the muzzle are raised; above the eyes are punched crescents representing eyebrows; within the snout are punched…

A slightly worn and bent, clipped late 12th-century silver medieval penny of Richard I, struck by the moneyer Pires at Winchester mint (1194-1199 AD; Short voided cross Class 4a) The reading of the mint signature is unusual and therefore tentative despite this sub-class being famed for die errors and anomalies.

Object type: HARNESS HOOK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A corroded cast copper-alloy hook, probably from medieval horse-harness. It consists of a rectangular attachment plate with rounded end and a protruding, inward-curving hook. At the junction of the two is a shallow ridge. The attachment plate is 19.2mm in length and is semi-circular in cross-section. On the reverse there is an integral copper-alloy rivet towards each end of a square cross-section (max. L. 5.1mm). The hook has been bent slightly to one side. It tapers initially before achieving a consistent width (c. 6.3mm). The strap-end is dark red-brown in colour with traces of gre…
