Cast lead object in the form of a human face of probable Medieval date, c. 1200-1500. The face shows a broad forehead and narrow eyes, the nose is now flattened and the mouth consists of a slit with thin lips. The hair is shown on the top of the head and cropped around the ears. Around the head is a narrow flange the edges of which appear cusped. On the back of the object is a 7.0mm deep, oval hollow. This is important as it shows that the object was cast in a two part mould and the molten lead was not simply poured into a hollow as is the case of many lead objects. Stylistically, the…

Iron bar on the end of which is a conical, copper alloy, finial. Corrosion makes it impossible to determine the original section of the bar which may have been circurlar or square, it now measures 8.5mm, The finial has a maximum diameter of 6.4mm. Where the finial meets the iron bar is a low, 2.5mm wide collar. Next to this is 1.0 mm wide, plain band which appears to be of a different alloy to the rest of the terminal, copper rather than brass coloured. Two circumferential grooves surround the finial, giving the effect of three rings. The finial narrows towards its tip on which is an …

Medieval or post Medieval hook fitting, probably from a vessel. The object consists of a 21.3mm long bar with a keeled, triangular section. On the underside of this are two, 6.4mm long, integrally cast rivets, their ends expanded to hold them in place. The hook is separated from the bar by a narrow, transverse moulding, it has a keeled section which narrows, changing to a D section. The hook is bent around almost to close, being almost straight near its end. Length 35.5mm, Width 9.0mm, Height 18.5mm, Mass 10.15g. This object is difficult to identify or date. It appears to have bee…

Unidentified object, gilt copper alloy, curved, claw-like, tapering to a truncated point, it has a flattened D shaped section with 3.0mm diameter hole through the rounded end. The use of gilding on one face and the object's form would suggest a Medieval date. Length 17.8mm Width 6.4mm, Thickness 1.8mm, Mass 0.74g.

Unidentified object of probable Medieval date constisting of a fragment of a copper alloy plate, the main part of which appears originally to have been heart-shaped with a central hole (only half survives). On one side of this is small projection with a longer bar extending from the broader side of the 'heart'. There is a small projection at the point where the bar joins the main plate and the end of the bar expands to form a leaf-shaped projection. It has not been possible to identify this fragment but it may have been part of a Medieval openwork buckle (cf. BUC-084602 although there…

Medieval gilt copper alloy fitting with an animal head terminal. Head block-like with a rounded nose, large lentoid eyes and a gaping mouth with a protruding tongue. Nostrils marked by two vertical notches. A groove runs down the length of the head, the whole of which is covered by rows of small pellets. At the back of the head head are small notches representing ears. Behind the head the section is stepped down and forms a narrow, D shaped bar the end of which is down-turned. The function of this object is uncertain but it may have formed part of a buckle or dress fitting of 12th cen…

Cast copper alloy fitting, possibly the guard from a dagger of Medival or post Medievl date although no parallels have been found, Through the middle of the object is an oval socket, 17.2 x 8.9mm at which point the object is 9.6mm deep. The hole is set off centre, the wall thick being 3.0mm on one side and 2.1mm on the other. Within the socket are what appear to be traces of iron corrosion products. On one side of the socket is a 17.8 long, slightly down curved, tapering, projection, the tip of which is damage. On the the other side of the socket is a 5.2mm long projection with a 10.2…

Gilt cast copper alloy figure in the form of a standing animal of unknown type. The animal has a long neck, slightly curved back and a pointed nose. The mouth is large and, although closed, is emphasised. Behind the head are two small ears. The body is long and terminated is a short, hanging tail. The legs are well formed and anatomically correct although the feet are unclear but suggest hooves rather than toes. Cast integrally with the animal is a 1.3mm thick, circular plate, through which is a rectangular hole 5.2 x 5.0mm, with a narrower projection on one side. Through the plate ar…

Cast copper alloy plate, rectangular and through which are three holes, two oval and one circular. There are also two rivet/nail holes and the underside of the plate bears traces of iron corrosion. At one end of the plate are two conjoined ball-like projections (actually flat-backed). Transverse ribs divide the face of the plate into three fields, one contains the ball-like projections, above this is a panel the sides of which are marked by two lateral notches, the edges of which are followed by grooves. There has been some loss of surface but the upper part of the plate bears what ma…

Loop of 3.1mm diameter copper alloy wire bent to form a U. Ends flattened, one damaged the other decorated with incised radial lines. Through each of the ends was a copper alloy rivet, the one that survives is 2.7mm diameter x 2.6mm long. This object cannot be identified with certainty, the short rivet suggest that it is not a loop from a buckle and it might be best seen as a loop handle from a small vessel.

Cast copper alloy fragment resembling one corner of a buckle frame with an off-set bar. The point where the bar joins the main section is marked by a moulding and the line of the bar is continued beyond the frame by a short, D sectioned projection decorated with three transverse mouldings. The remains of the loop are D sectioned and it appears that the loop was twisted. While this object has been described in terms of it being a buckle frame this identification is uncertain and it is possible that it represents the remains of a handle.
