A complete Medieval (c.AD1100-1500) spindle whorl. The object is circular with a flat top and base and rounded edges. A perforation runs through the centre measuring at 4.5mm on one side and tapering to 2.2mm on the other, perhaps indicating the object is unfinished. The object is undecorated and has a brown patina on the surface. For comparisons see: YORYM-054931 and YORYM-867FA5.

A flattened biconical lead alloy spindle whorl, solid, with linear decoration on both surfaces. On one surface the design reaches from a raised ring around the central hole to the outer circular edge of the whorl, whilst the other features a thickened central circle that is surrounded by short radial lines, which are themselves enclosed by two outer circles.

A lead or lead alloy spindle whorl, cast, covered with an even coating of lead corrosion products. Any design elements that were present on the upper part of its biconical shape are now too worn and corroded to be visible. The underneath is recessed and appears to have a radially arranged sunburst style design around the central hole.

A small biconical spindle whorl of lead alloy, coated almost entirely in corrosion. The designs on the 'upper' and lower surface are both linear, but differ in that one is an arrangement of non-intersecting tesselated nested triangles, whislt the other has them overlaid to form diamond and zig-zag patterns.

A small, cast lead spindle whorl, with a central holed diameter of 8mm. It is of a rounded biconical shape and decorated in the recognisable spindle whorl pattern of one face having an arrangement of radially arranged petalloid rasied areas and the other a series of ridges interspersed with raised pellets. As the whorl is made of lead, this indicates a roughly medieval to post-medieval date. It is very difficult to apply a more exact date though due to a lack of a more complete diagnostic.

A lead spindle whorl of biconical shape, cast with a hole of approximately 8.5mm diameter at the centre. One side features the recognisable spindle whorl patternation of raised pellets situated within negative spaces delineated by raised radial ridges. The opposite side is partly degraded but resembles the first. There is a nick in the side of the body, possibly caused by plough action. As the whorl is made of lead, this indicates a roughly medieval to post-medieval date. It is very difficult to apply a more exact date though due to a lack of a more complete diagnostic.

A lead spindle whorl of biconical shape, cast with a hole of approximately 9mm diameter at the centre. The two sides differ in level of corrosion; the less corroded side features the recognisable spindle whorl patternation of raised pellets situated within negative spaces delineated by raised radial ridges. The opposite side is degraded but may feature petalloid designs. As the whorl is made of lead, this indicates a roughly medieval to post-medieval date. It is very difficult to apply a more exact date though due to a lack of a more complete diagnostic.

A lead alloy spindle whorl, covered in lead corrosion products, biconical in shape and probably of medieval or post-medieval date. A lead alloy spindle whorl, covered in lead corrosion products, biconical in shape and probably of medieval or post-medieval date. A lead alloy spindle whorl, covered in lead corrosion products, biconical in shape and probably of medieval or post-medieval date. The upper and lower surfaces are decorated with the 'typical' spindle whorl designs of linear petalloid rased areas on one side and triangles or zigzagged lines enclosing pellets on the other. The central hole and the outer edges are uneven, probably due to corrosion in the soil.

A lead spindle whorl, probably of medieval date. Spindle whorls are a a textile manufacturing technology that allows for the production of threads with a consistent twist and therefore thickness. The formerly circular shape is now slightly distorted, probably by its time spent in the ploughsoil, but the overall form is still the common flattened biconical shape. Both surfaces are decorated, one with raised pellets enclosed in vaguely quadrilateral divisions. The other side has a stylised radial petal-like design. This is similar to other whorls recorded on the database, LVPL-AE71…

A lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date due to material and style of decoration. The shape is biconical discoid with differing patterns between the two sides. Once side is decorated with what appears to be a stylised rotationally symmetrical floral motif of longitudinally stretched pentagons, the central spaces devoid of decoration, reaching from the inner hole to the outer rim. The other side features a radial arrangement of crude roughly ovoid shapes, each containing amorphous pellet like designs. The diameter of the central hole is 8mm, and the distance from the edge of t…
