A 14th century medieval 'Lombard' jetton of a lead alloy. Objects of this type were used for the reckoning of debts on a counting board, especially in European financial institutions of the 13-16th century. This particular example is Italian and possibly refers to the Riccardi family, dating to the 14th century. It appears that it would have originally been roughly circular or at least ovoid, but damage, possibly within the soil, has left two large notches. one is more rounded than the other and appears to have happened earlier or to be a flaw of the original flan.
