A Late Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy thimble, probably dating to c. AD 1400-1600. The thimble is cast, domed and with sloping sides. Circular hand drilled pits are arranged in a concentric spiral extending from the base, although leving a narrow plain rim, to the apex, leaving a small bald tonsure. Dimensions: Height 21.7mm; diameter 23.5mm; thickness of walls c. 1.8mm; weight 14.19g. Holmes (1988) notes that bald tonsures are a more characteristically early feature and cease to be seen on thimbles after c. 1650, whilst the spiral arrangement of pits was increasingly ub…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy thimble, probably dating to c. AD 1400-1550. The thimble is domed, with sloping sides and hand-drilled circular pits arranged in a series of longitudinal lines along its sides and in a spiral on the top, leaving a small bald tonsure a the apex. Dimensions: height 20.8mm; diameter 20.7mm; weight 5.86g. Holmes (1988) notes that bald tonsures are a feature of earlier thimbles, becoming less common with time and disappearing by c. 1650, whilst the arrangment of pits into a spiral from base to apex had become ubiquitous by 1500. The slightly i…

In incomplete Medieval to Pot-Medieval copper alloy thimble, now in two parts, probably dating to c. AD 1400-1600. The thimble was probably originally domed, with with circular, hand-drilled pits extending in a spiral from the base of the thimble to the crown, leaving a small bald tonsure at the apex. The tonsure and wall of the thimble are now separated, with the latter only partially surviving. Total weight: 2.76g. cf. Holmes (1988: 4, fig. 2a), dated to c. 1400-1550. He (ibid), notes that the regular arrangment of pits seen here was ubiquitous by the 16th century, whilst the …

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy thimble, probably dating to c. AD 1400 - 1600. The thimble has a domed top with sloping sides. It exhibits an unusual laminar break, with a distinct outer layer with a dark brown patina coming away from an inner surface with a bright green patina. The lack of any holes on this inner surface would suggest that this relates to the manner in which it was cast, rather than a second thimble placed inside the other. The holes of the outer surface are arranged into an irregular spiral, with a number of holes misplaced or of uneven depth. The outer sur…
